Teams were tanking but half assing it. Tank then they play hard and become too good to get another useable player in the next draft. Unless you have a good free agent destination you are not gonna get marquee players. The only way Philly could get a Joel embiid and think championship was to draft him. Tanking gives you a chance at a franchise player. And even then you have to draft well. Teams are losing entire years to draft the marquese Chris and Anthony Bennet's of the world.

Don't get me wrong you can still get good players later in the draft like giannis, Donovan Mitchell, Gobert, Kawhi. But you need foundational pieces before you go there.
I'd say tank but do it in the years where there's multiple can't miss prospects coming out or make sure you are bad enough to get that prospect or you wasted a year.

There was a time when we ( wizards) used to be constantly in the lottery for top draft picks with golden state, Sacramento and Cleveland. Two of those teams built their foundation off of those picks..the other one Cleveland traded theirs away and got better.. And the other one blundered away their picks

My view is that if you’re a good enough GM to build a team completely from scratch with youth and picks, then you’re easily capable to manage a team with actual talent. On local radio just now, Out of town troll hosting the show says the Pistons should hire Sam Hinkie and do a fire sale. Tank the next “5” years and get our own Embiid. Including giving away 24 year old Andre Drummond as a salary dump. The idea is fukking stupid for many reasons but this is the mentality permeating NBA fanbases nowadays. As a Pistons fan, I want my team to continue making whatever moves possible to win basketball games. Every key player we have are 27 or younger and if we ‘start over’, yeah we may have more cracks at the plate to get an Embiid or Simmons but there’s a higher likelihood of not getting another Drummond for another 15 years. Orlando has been bad all decade, they got another Howard? Sacramento been bad for over a decade, and gave away Cousins. When are they getting another?

Yeah, they raised the banner back in May. My bro in law was there, it was crazy hyped that night.

I think Hinkie was blackballed, though...

Sixers were playing with fire as far as league rules. It’s literally in the NBA constitution that teams have to put forth their best effort to win. League looks the other way for a year, when it’s year 5, league had to end the process

It has to be enraging for Hinkie to hear these announcers screaming about "you're witnessing the future of the NBA!!" I hope some other team hires him and Embiid signs with them in free agency.

:russ: @ Randle trying to stick Embiid, no wonder he damn near dropped 50. McConnell and Reddikk kept driving to get blocked early in the game while he was open for 3 too. Kick that shyt out!

Brandon Ingram is going to be good once he fills out.
