It was weird because this was in New York, at the height of the boom bap era. Death Row in the front rows, and these dudes twerking on stage.

They wasn't the best representation of rap in the south. They would've been better off bring out Luke and 2 Live Crew. :mjpls:

Honestly, they were affiliated with So So Def which is probably the only reason why they got to perform.

Furthermore, they stole that dance move from Jamaicans. It's the butterfly, and they simply put a bama ass twist and call it the tootsie roll :scusthov:

WOMEN did the butterfly by the way, not nikkas. :patrice:

They come from FL, where it was booty shaking music bass music, what you think they would play at Freak Nic

That's the same thing folks would say when NY artists came down to Freak Nic. ATL booty shaking along with Mia music dominate Freak Nic

Back when brehs use to dance. Women gravitated to the dudes who could do the dances.

But it was mostly nikkas in the front row :dahell:

Even MC Hammer had the awareness to include women dancers :mjpls:

They up on stage by themselves, shaking their ass (pause) in front of a bunch of nikkas. :scust:

Now look the south laughing at New York funny how the tables turn

Oddly enough, I always thought that show was the beginning of the end in terms of New York's influence and power when it came to the rap game.

Tupac and Biggie died within 2 years. and the Boom Bap era ended within that same time period.

east coast was never strictly boom-bap unless you were down with that sausagefest life.
and just about all those artists in the audience hit the HBCU circuit at some point, so the dance moves weren't anything out of the normal.
even wutang's goons were bobbing their heads. like the dude sitting their in the ski mask, and the one next to him, who looked like he just ate a few bodyparts for breakfast.

luke had no records out, plus he had just performed at the '94 show.
lol @ 2 live crew. this aint 1989.

I don't think a so so def affiliation held that much weight with the committee. the tootsee roll was just huge bro. let it go.

the tootsee roll crushed the butterfly's buildings.

and yea, dudes that were really bout that dancing performance life could do every move. no restrictions.

Yeah that was him...

But you also have to remember, he had a tranny in one of his videos :dame:

NY
Tootise roll and whoop there it is was a thang around the time..you see biggie was boping to it in the crowd

Him head nodding goes against the narrative people love to push about NY'ers hating on the south on this board lol.

For the most part we looked at that kind of rap as party music & that's it. Same with 2 Live Crew

not just new York, but east coast music in general was more nationally popular in the late '90s/early 2000s than in the mid-90s.

nobody talks about this tho.

Was it confirmed?

Generally I don't think male rappers should ever dance it a major way.
Once my boy pointed out in that Foxy Brown video "Look at Jay Z. He's hardly moving with all these girls dancing like mad around him." And Jay won.

Through history all these new dances and shyt just come off as weird marketing schemes and gimmicks.

Ya rappers can grove, head bop, move hands. Too much to me was always wack.

UNLESS ppl can dance like Michael Jackson, Usher, Chris Brown and breakdancers.

But it's a different style.

I grew up in VA. The only time dudes was really dancing like that was during the new jack swing era, and the Kane and Kid n Play shyt back in 88 until like 92.
And then you have go go up in DC, but again... dudes wasn't busting it open on the dance floor like women :mjpls:

The song was a hit. There's no denying it.

All I'm saying is at the time, that shouldn't have been a representation of the south and it's contributions to the rap game. To me it was a sign of disrespect. They were basically saying. Look ya'll. Look at these country ass nikkas on stage twerking. That's the south. They're not on our level. A joke.

The south should've had their won showcase.

Imagine if Ball & MGJ performed this song on stage
