Man me and @Mugen was jammin on this one in a thread over the weekend and I had the album stuck in my head since then, been waking up every morning singing it, singing it at work and everything.

Tonight I finally put it on... What y'all know about this?

Me and @Mugen was singing "Save the Children" but this album is full of just soulful, classic, iconic, music.

For folks who don't know the story, Marvin was singing "Heard it Through the Grapevine", stuff like that, you know, Motown classics until Berry Gordy and them paired him up with Tammi Terrell (who was romantically connected to James Brown and David Ruffin). Tammi and Marvin made magic on so many songs like "Ain't No Mountain (high enough)", "Ain't nothing like the real thing" and more.

It's been speculated that even though Tammi was with David at the time, that Marvin was in love with her. I believe it... because when she got sick and eventually passed away, Marvin spiraled into a deep depression.

During his time away and while mourning her loss, he was writing what would wind up becoming one of, if not THE, greatest album of all time. And the crazy thing? Y'all brehs know the crazy thing?

Berry Gordy refused to let him record it at first. Motown had never done any socially conscious music like this, and Berry wasn't feeling it. He just knew that the people wasn't gon be feeling it either.

But Marvin forced his hand, and Berry wound up having to give him what he wanted.

And Marvin Gaye... produced this... this... this masterpiece, brehs. :wow:

This album gives me goosebumps to this day. :wow:

I present to you... "What's Going On".

It’s definitely up there. And to the Stevie fans, I also put this above “songs in the key of life” (and I really love that one almost just as much. It’s probably my dad’s favorite, next to “innervisions”, “hot buttered soul”, “Abraxas” and a few others).

My pops had all of motown’s shyt and encouraged us to dig through his records, tapes, and CD’s as often as possible. He also played full albums around the house and while we drove around New Orleans and Atlanta.

This one and “I want you” always stuck out to me the most because of Marvin + the session players’ style of making songs out of jam sessions, and making the songs flow into each other. It was also one of my first introductions to socially conscious r&b/soul from the 70’s (“innervisions” was one of the other ones).

Aside from “I want you” it’s the most perfect, flawless album I’ve ever heard. I still feel like I find little details I missed on previous listens. I don’t think that feeling i got the first time hearing it will ever be recreated.

It’s fukked up how Motown kept artists on a creative leash. Yeah we got classics on classics, but who knows what could have been of Marvin and the band was allowed to go in a room and just do their thing, in a place of artistic freedom, time and time again, with no label executive input.

“What’s going on” is pure artistic magic and I hate that it gets sometime overlooked by his safer work like “let’s get it on”.

I love this version man shyt make me wanna shed tears, it’s heartbreaking just as much as it is uplifting. “I did the best I could, nobody understood”

Like fukk man I really go through these emotions in many situations of life.
