The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of history’s greatest 4x4s. But classic-car restorer Jonathan Ward kept hearing the same thing from customers: Can’t we get the vintage look without the vintage technology?
For them, he founded Icon Inc., a Chatsworth, California-based company whose most popular model is a top-to-bottom reinvention of a 1970 Land Cruiser. The FJ40, featured in the Summer 2014 issue of Bloomberg Pursuits, comes with a handbuilt aluminum body; disc brakes; a fuel-injected, 350-horsepower V-8 engine; and a level of fit and finish -- exotic leathers, stainless-steel knobs -- that’s the equal of any luxury car. The degree of customization is up to the buyer, as every FJ40 is bespoke, requiring six to eight months of meticulous assembly.
The typical buyer is “looking for something with distinction that’s not so wrought with preconceived notions of wealth,” says Ward, who adds that the average wait time is about 14 months.
Mark Dowley, chairman of strategic marketing consultancy DDCD & Partners, who owns so many old 4x4s he’s “embarrassed” to share the number, says the FJ series is by far his favorite: “Maintaining the old-school looks but giving it a modern ride and safety -- it’s just such an awesome combination.”
