Broner showing maturity in preparing for Molina
Feb 11, 2015 By PBC Editor
Perspective, maturity and humility. Not exactly the three words that usually come to mind when describing three-time world champion Adrien Broner.

Adrien-Broner-PBC-Legends.jpg

Adrien Broner, right, jokes with legends Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns in New York in January 2015.

But those are exactly the words trainer Mike Stafford used in talking about the transformation of Broner from brash youngster to dedicated professional.

“The perspective aspect from his standpoint has changed, because he's realized that he has a team, being me, [adviser] Al Haymon and himself," Stafford said from Broner's training camp in his hometown of Cincinnati.

"He knows some of the things that he's done wrong in the past, and so he's shown a lot more maturity and humility. We're all making the decisions together; it's not just him doing it on his own anymore."

The 25-year-old Broner, who is nicknamed “The Problem,” will face hammer-fisted John Molina Jr. (27-5, 22 KOs) in Las Vegas on March 7 for the debut of the Premier Boxing Champions series on NBC.

Part of a multi-year deal between the network and Haymon Boxing, the card’s co-main event features Keith Thurman vs. Robert Guerrero in a 147-pound matchup.

"This is a very big date on NBC for us after being on HBO and Showtime," Stafford said. "It’s is a really big deal for Adrien, so he's really focused."

Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) became a champion in a third weight class when he jumped from 135 pounds to win his 147-pound debut by split decision over Paulie Malignaggi in June 2013.
Broner already had won a 130-pound championship in November 2011 with a third-round knockout over Vicente Martin Rodriguez, as well as a 135-pound title with an eighth-round TKO of Antonio DeMarco in November 2012.

"There was a lot of pressure on him, being that he was going to be the next Floyd Mayweather, and being that he's a millionaire," Stafford said. "But now he's gotten accustomed to all of that, so he's a different person from two years ago to now."

Broner's 12-round unanimous decision over Emmanuel Taylor in September represented his second consecutive 140-pound triumph since falling by unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana, who floored Broner in both the second and eighth rounds in December 2013.

"We wouldn't be talking about him losing his first fight if he wouldn't have gotten caught with a couple of punches and gone down against Maidana,” Stafford said. “But he showed that he's still someone who should be recognized as one of the best fighters in the world.

"We had the opportunity to move up in weight, and experienced one win and one loss, but we came away with a title with that one win. With all of that, we just had one bad night and a couple of bad rounds, but he also demonstrated that he's one helluva fighter. I guess that everything happens for a reason."

If Broner is to achieve his goal of becoming a four-division champion this year, he will first have to get beyond Molina.

"I think the public is going to see a more patient and skillful boxer who is going to take his opponent apart,” Stafford said. “He's going to make fewer mistakes than his counterpart.

"He's got so much confidence because he realizes that he's got the experience. [Molina] may be dangerous, but Adrien has so much talent and so much speed, and he's training his ass off. Just wait until you see him."

Mares joins debut PBC card against Reyes
Feb 12, 2015 By Jason Scavone
Abner Mares, a three-division world champion at 118 pounds, 122 and 126, will join the March 7 debut card of the Premier Boxing Champions series on NBC when he squares off against Arturo Santos Reyes.
Abner-Mares-2.jpg

Abner Mares trains in preparation for his fight against Santos Reyes in Las Vegas on March 7.

Mares (28-1-1, 15 KOs) and Reyes (18-4-0, 5 KOs) will appear on the card, along with Keith Thurman-Robert Guerrero and Adrien Broner-John Molina Jr. The Mares bout will be televised live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on either the NBC broadcast between 8:30 and 11 p.m. EDT, or on the NBC Sports Network telecast starting at 11 p.m.

Coming off wins against Jonathan Oquendo and Jose Ramirez, Mares, 29, took decisions over Joseph Agbeko and Eric Morel for his 118 and 122 titles, respectively, and earned a ninth-round TKO against Daniel Ponce De Leon for the 126 championship.

Reyes, also 29, makes his United States debut in the fight. He was a member of the Mexican Olympic team at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to fight in Las Vegas on March 7,” Mares said. “This is a fantastic card that is great for me and great for the sport of boxing. I look forward to putting on a show for the fans and winning impressively.”

Molina Jr. generating power from unlikely source
Feb 12, 2015 By Jason Bracelin

John Molina Jr. has a problem. Those who step into the ring with him as he trains for his showdown with Adrien Broner on March 7 have an even bigger one.
john-molina-jr-pbc-shoot.jpg

John Molina Jr. will face Adrien Broner in the ring in Las Vegas on March 7.

“You know how hard it is to get sparring partners to stay with me?” Molina asks rhetorically.

“I’ve knocked out seven of them—knocked them out cold. And I’m paying these guys great money.

"I had to get [160-pounders] to come spar with me, because I was knocking out guys my weight.”

Molina’s power is well-known: Of the 140-pound contender’s 27 victories, 22 have come by knockout. But where does it come from exactly?

It likely begins with Molina’s background in gymnastics.

Starting in the sixth grade, Molina was a star gymnast.

He was so good that he was selected to be a part of a school program in his native California for which he traveled to other schools to put on gymnastic shows.

With all that work on the parallel bars, the pommel horse and the steady rings, Molina developed serious core strength, which is crucial in transferring the momentum of a power punch from the lower body up through the hips and out to the fist.

When Molina got to high school, he became a standout in another sport: wrestling. By the time he was a sophomore, he was ranked second in his weight class in the state.

He credits wrestling with helping him cultivate the discipline and stamina that he’d later need to take full advantage of his power in the ring.

Finally, when Molina was a senior in high school, he turned to boxing.

He won his first national tournament after only five fights—the minimum needed to qualify for the competition.

Molina went 22-2 as an amateur, with 17 knockouts.

“Not 17 referee stoppages,” he was quick to clarify. “Seventeen physical knockouts.”

One guy actually broke his leg because he fell unconscious on his way to the canvas after Molina belted him.

“I was physically stopping everybody I stepped into the ring with,” he says.

With a chuckle, Molina recalled putting on a pair of boxing gloves for the first time, a moment that sticks with him like his punches tend to stick with his opponents.

“I’ll never forget, the trainer came up to me and said, ‘What’s wrong, kid? Your girlfriend break up with you?’” Molina remembers. “I said, ‘No, I just want to fight.’”

Broner geared toward becoming ‘greatest of this era’
Feb 13, 2015 By Lem Satterfield
Hall of Fame boxer Aaron Pryor once advised Adrien Broner that it was OK to keep talking and making predictions as long as you're winning.
Adrien-Broner-PBC-photo-shoot_0.JPG

Adrien Broner is preparing for his network television debut March 7, when he fights John Molina Jr. on NBC.

But the usually outspoken Broner, who, like Pryor, hails from Cincinnati, said "I'm not doing as much talking" in an attempt to "turn it down a little bit" entering his 140-pound clash with John Molina Jr. on March 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Broner (29-1, 22 KOs), who is nicknamed “The Problem,” will be after his third straight victory since losing by unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana, who dropped Broner in the second and eighth rounds of their 147-pound bout in December 2013.

Yet as the three-division champion enters his matchup with Molina Jr. in the debut of the Premier Boxing Champions series on NBC, Broner has taken to calling himself "Mr. NBC."
He has designs on winning a fourth belt in as many weight divisions as he pursues his goal of becoming "the greatest in boxing" of this era.

"It's definitely a huge position to be in, because a guy like me, with the name that I've got, the reputation that I've got, I've got to perform," Broner said. "There are going to be a lot of people who will be seeing Adrien Broner fighting for the first time.

“I mean, you've got some people who have probably heard my name, but they probably haven't seen me fight. For them seeing me fight for the first time, I've got to put on a show. I'm always coming to do that. It's just a matter of what round I'm going to stop him in."

Broner shared his thoughts surrounding his upcoming fight:

Given that you're fighting on regular network television next month for the first time, how do you see this benefitting your career?
This is a chance to get to know Adrien Broner. I'm a lovable guy, and I'm a smart, intelligent and handsome guy. Plus, a lot of people can relate to my past.

All that I have to do is to go in there and get my victory and put my show on. Of course I've got to turn it down a little bit, but I'm still the same guy, and they'll see on March 7. I'm Mr. NBC.

Having fought for world titles on a big stage, and, in fact, having lost on a big stage, are you a better fighter for the experience?
You know, a lot of people get it twisted. To be great, you don't have to be undefeated. And that's no disrespect to those who are undefeated.

To be great, you don't have to be undefeated. Greatness is what you do after you get knocked down. Do you get up and go and continue like the fighter that you once were? That's showing that you're good. I'm going to let my talent speak for itself.

But are you more humble and more focused as a result of losing?
You know, I'm not doing as much talking as I have in the past, and I don't have to. I'm going to still be myself, but at the end of the day, I'm going to let my talents speak for me.

In this era, I am the greatest in boxing. It's been said once before that there was the greatest, and that's Muhammad Ali. But I'm going to say that in this era, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, they're almost done with boxing. They've got a couple of more fights left and then they're done. But I am the greatest in this era. I'm the greatest in boxing. So I'm just going to be myself and go and get my victory.

Broner puts sparring partners to work as he prepares for Molina
Feb 19, 2015 By Lem Satterfield
The temperature had dipped to minus-7 degrees in snow-covered Cincinnati, but inside the Over The Rhine Recreation Center, things were heating up between Adrien Broner and his four sparring partners on February 18.
Adrien-Broner-sparring.JPG

Adrien Broner has been putting his sparring partners through their paces as he prepares for his March 7 fight against John Molina Jr.

Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) has ramped up his training as prepares for his 140-pound clash against John Molina Jr. (27-5, 22 KOs) on March 7 in the debut of the Premier Boxing Champions series on NBC.

Broner, a three-division world champion, is scheduled to depart on February 22 for Las Vegas, where he will fight Molina at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"John Molina is a tough guy. My nickname for him is that he's a punching bag that can win. He's a punching bag that can hit back. He's a punching bag that has power," said Broner, who will be seeking his third straight victory since losing his 147-pound title to Marcos Maidana in December 2013.

"If you're not on your 'P's and 'Q's, then it might only take one second and that fight can be changed, so I'm definitely taking this fight seriously. You've got some guys who can take a lot of punishment, but they can't give it. But [Molina] can take a lot of punishment and give it back. He's a deadly fighter."

Broner has been working hard to prepare himself for Molina. During the aforementioned sparring session, he faced 147-pounders William Jackson, Brad Solomon, Anthony Flores and Robert Frankel. Broner did so over the course of four nine-minute rounds—rather than the standard 12 rounds of three minutes each—with no break between each of them.

The 25-year-old Broner, nicknamed “The Problem,” worked on his movement against Jackson, a 25-year-old Cincinnati native with a record of 13-2-1.

There were some spirited exchanges between Broner and Jackson, who, at times, turned up the heat along the ropes. Eventually, though, Broner peppered Jackson with trash talk as he sent him retreating.

"He's always going to trash talk you, but I try to put a lot of pressure on him and make him work while he's going backwards,” Jackson said.

“We were together in the amateurs, and I've been sparring with him since probably his fifth fight, so, for me, this is everyday stuff. We've been doing this forever. It's just like a chess match where you're trying to figure out which move he's going to do next."

Next up to spar with Broner was Solomon, a 31-year-old Louisiana native with a record of 24-0, followed by Flores, a 24-year-old from Inglewood, California, who is 6-0.

The last man to engage Broner was Frankel, a 34-year-old Denver-based veteran with a record of 33-15-1. Among Frankel's losses was a fifth-round knockout by Molina in June 2011.
“I actually fought John Molina, so I'm a little bit of an insider as far as that goes. I just try to bring a little bit of that pressure because John Molina comes forward and throws a lot of overhand rights," Frankel said. "But you have to be careful when you're doing that, because Broner can counter you off of anything and he can hurt you.

“I just think that Adrien’s too fast. I think that he's going to really touch up John Molina a lot, and I think that Adrien has a chance to win this fight by KO.”

Learn the story behind Mares’ signature walkout bandana
Feb 18, 2015 By PBC Editor
One of the coolest walkout fashion statements in all of boxing is the haunting half-skull bandana Abner Mares dons each time he heads to the ring. But the bandana carries much deeper meaning beyond just an intimidating look.

After defeating Jonathan Arias in his 17th professional bout in June 2008, Mares suffered a serious eye injury during training camp.

A torn retina brought on a risky surgical procedure, clouding his future just as he was entering his prime.

“They told me I couldn’t fight anymore, that I was out for a year,” Mares said. “I went back to the doctor after a year and they said it’s a miracle.

“I wanted to return different and I felt people had forgotten about me, so I wanted to come back and show that I was dead, and now I was coming back.”

Mares returned to defeat Jonathan Perez in May 2009, and will fight on March 7 for the 14th time since suffering that injury, making his Premier Boxing Champions debut in Las Vegas against Arturo Santos Reyes.

Since that 2009 return, the application of the bandana is now a staple in his final preparations for each fight.

It symbolizes a transformation, if you will.

“I’m transforming from a sweet, caring guy, which I am outside of the ring, into this ferocious killer who is ready for war.”

For Thurman, it's all part of the games
Feb 20, 2015 By Jason Scavone

With 21 knockouts in 24 fights, you know you’re going to get power out of Keith Thurman. What might not be immediately evident is that the man deploying that power has a strategic mind for when and how to use it—honed in no small part from learning cerebral games at a young age.

Keith-Thurman-Leonard-Bundu.jpg

Keith Thurman throws a right at Leonard Bundu during their December 13, 2014, fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Thurman might be diving into the I Ching and the Torah these days to keep his intellectual fires stoked, but he developed his respect for thinking his way around situations when he was 4 years old and his father introduced him to chess and pool.

“I was also 4 years old when my father taught me how to shoot pool. All these little games I used to play as a kid, he used to explain how you needed to use your head, “ Thurman said. “I was 8 years old the first time I beat my dad in a game of chess, because he would never let me win. I checkmated him with my pawn.”

Channeling his inner Garry Kasparov helped develop Thurman in the ring. He may have been a one-dimensional teenager when he first got going, but he says learning things like how to use the angles on a pool table equipped him to be able to expand the scope of his thinking about the ring.

“Boxing is a game. It’s a sport, and a sport at the end of the day is a game. To play the sport or to play the game, you need to do so wisely. Especially in games where one could be knocked out physically, he said. “I learned that I have power, and I learned to be comfortable in the fact that I have power and it doesn’t need to be a secret, but I don’t have to show it with every blow. I can choose when to use my power just like you can choose when to bring your queen out. Until then, I’ll see how you handle my pawns and keep throwing jabs at you.”
