My dad had a stroke last year and I'm taking a year off work to take care of him.
What frustrates me is that he's 66 and prior to him having a stroke he never went to the Doctor. Like ever.
I told him several times that he needed to go for a check up.
I asked his doctor if his stroke could have been prevented if he went to the Doctor, was informed about his high blood pressure and diabetes, and took the proper medication.
He said yes.
What also frustrates me is that growing up my father spend a lot of time talking about finances and how far behind black people are in that field.
Said he grew up seeing too many black people struggling so he tried to learn as much as he can to not make the same mistakes he saw so many others make.
I wish he took that same approach with health.
Too many older black folks got that "but I feel fine" mentality.
Have conversations with your older loved ones and force them to go to the Doctor.
I'm mad at myself for not forcing him to go.
