A Russian bank gave Marine Le Pen’s party a loan. Then weird things began happening.

Yeah didn't read the whole thing but this was known : french banks were refusing to loan them money, so this came up. Not sure what the law is on loans from foreign banks to political parties (it's not a donation, which I guess is more regulated).

It's a pretty wild read considering the hands the loan ended up passing through. Maybe more will come from it maybe not. I do think this was originally reported sometime ago.

Do you know if anything ever came of her misusing EU funds?

Seems like she's always caught breaking laws but is never sanctioned for it.

Yeah the wild thing is what happened after the loan, not the loan itself. Who knows where it will end.

Nah no idea, I think some random assistant got fired or something like that and some administrative/financial sanction happened but haven't really followed the whole thing. Despite the usual extreme-right populist bs, she's very much in the system so there's no reason to believe she'll go to prison more than anyone else. Also I wouldn't be surprised that whoever is following the case at the EU level is keeping it on the low so as to not make of her a "martyr" of "Brussels" and add more fuel to the anti-EU fire. She would probably love to be convicted, with how people think she would probably win more votes :snoop:

The issue is that indicted or not, it's a win win for her. Either she will claim martyrdom from the UE if convicted or harassement from Brussels if not so it's always complicated when those kind of politicians are in justice trouble. But yeah she (or her party at least) should have been sanctionned long ago for this.
