Kool G Rap in my opinion is undeniably the GOAT storyteller (Nas comes 2nd) and he just solidifies his spot with this song, which in my opinion is thee greatest storytelling song of all time.
The song is literally 9 and a half mintues of straight storytelling and vivid imagery. The story begins with the introduction of the main characters (Kool G Rap in the lead role, a woman, and her man), the setting where the story is taking place (at the woman’s house in the Pocono Mountains), and what happens to set the story up (G Rap and the woman have a sexual encounter). In the middle of the story a complication arises (the woman’s man sends people to kill them), which results in a difficulty (they have to escape on a snowmobile), leading to further developments (G Rap gets shot, but they make it away alive). Then the setting changes (in the Hamptons), there are further incidents (G Rap and the woman get caught and taken onto a yacht,
where there’s a gunfight), and the situation ends, tragically where thewoman gets shot and killed, and G rap kills everyone and begins to shoot the sky crying…
Not only is the story plot super dope but the structure of the song is amazing. Each verse is rightfully called a chapter since they are extremely long and descriptive. The first “chapter” starts by introducing the setting, story, and characters. However when it ends there is a type of intermission where the beat changes to a relaxed and layed back beat. Here G rap is jsut talkign and perfectly sets the scee for the next verse:
So here I am
Laid up in this lavish house, up in the Poconos
With this chick I don’t even really know
Steady stressing me how ill her man is
So what I go and do, heh-heh, I nail her ass to the bed anyway
Straight twisting mami’s back out
Hit three o'clock, fell right the fukk to sleep
Clothes still on, breath smelling like Henrock
Totally no kind of regards for this bytch’s man
I guess it’s just another one of those G Rap adventures
Then there is a pause and the beat changes dramatically and appropriatley, since it perfectly fits the drama and action packed lyrics that happen in the second verse/chapter. Once the verse ends G rap brillaintly details his plans and contemplation of what is going to happen and what he’s going to do, leaving the listenre in suspension:
Then laid back in the sack and lit the ism
I thought about the realism
nikkas coming and bring they steel with them
I got just the thing to deal with them
Nickel plate Mac, the laser attached, with two clips packed
Push a nikkas whole head back, so I snatched that
So quick spread out and play the layout
Still on alert, me and the skirt, day in and day out
Then there is another beat change (very relaxed and laid back) for the “intermission”/break between chapters 2 and 3, which details a conversation between G rap and “mami” which perfectly captures the emotions, thoughts, and feeling of the characters in the scene that follows. It is also entertaining and one first lsiten adds to the unpredictable factor of the song. Then there is a pause and another beat change in the transition to the 3rd and final verse/chapter. The beat for the 3rd chapter is perfect since it gives you that “final chapter”/end of the story vibe and feeling while also fitting the drama that is going on in this verse. It is also important to note that G raps flow and delivery is also changed on every single verse in accord to the different beat, which the beat itself is calibrated to fit the content and theme/feel of the story in each verse. It is perfectly structured to follow easily and more entertainingly. Also note that throguhout each evrse there are perfect sound effects (like in nikkas Bleed) that add to the story as it progresses. The Sound effects along with the beat and imagery, gives this song a perfect feel and makes it literally the msot cinematic storytelling rap song OAT. It’s literally like a fcuking movie.
G rap also utilizes many literary and poetic devices such as imagery, allusion, assonance, consonance, and point of view.
Here is an example of consonance from the song:
The other six started to pop, felt something hot,
I think I got hit, my jacket is ripped.
The words “hot” and “hit” use the same consonant sounds, but different vowel sounds in the middle.
Here you can see G rap sagaciously utilizing in-sentence rhyme schemes and GOAT assonance:
“Would wanna spend those five digit o’s, on bimbo’s
Bar closed, back to her six double o, she drove
My eyes closed her nikka dozed, when I awoke
Saw mad snow, we at her spot at the Poconos
Bridge robes, crib hot as a stove
She changed out of her clothes, put on a silky bath robe
Panty hoes with see thru holes, pretty toes”
Also check out the incredible imagery:
The next day about a quarter to eight
I heard a squeek on the staircase
Got the gat from under the pillow case
Somebody broke in, now me and boo fully awoken
Good thing I slept inside my clothes and shorty was frozen
I’m waiting for a head to poke in, and start smoking
The home invasion, right through the door, he started blazing
Heard a crash, they broke through the door, they on her ass
Jumped off the balcony like a falcon Gee
With honey right in back of me, feel on top of the snow in agony
shyt was thick, couldn’t get to the six, they loaded the fifth
Saw the snowmobile yo fukk it
We start jumped it, get on top of the shyt and peeled
Mad soldiers out in the field, busting they steel
The raw deal, kill or be killed, shyt is real
Ten hit me right on my heels, trying to make a thugs blood spill
In zero degrees, nikkas on skis, me and these Gees
Slipping through pine trees, we skid up behind these
I think I got hit, my jacket is ripped
Loaded my last clip then broke out quick and checked the chick
She on my back tighter than shyt, like vise grips
I started clapping, nikkas rolled up in blowing black and
Spotted this Rover by a log cabin, we got our as in
Mash the gas, make the fukking wheel spin
The safety again, and still doing a hundred and ten
Shorty shivering, lips quivering, ski suits up in the back seat
Pulled over the Jeep get it in
Pretty soon we at my rest piece, up in the bedroom
Got shorty boo tending my bullet wound
Put on some tunes, she blew my shyt like a balloon
Up in the moonlit room, and dikking her womb
They took us both to a boat dock, then on a yacht
The chick’s man was there with a sixteen shot
nikka was hot, took the Glock and hit me dead in my knot
Honey started to panic and yelling that money in spanish
Thinking he’s out to take advantage
So we’re out in the fukking Atlantic
With no lifesavers and stranded
Backhanded the chick on the floor, called her a whore
Said, “amor you won’t be pretty no more”
Took us on a tour, down in the deck
Guess he wasn’t ready to kill us yet
Saw this nikka there, holding the Tec
Ready to wet, I’m started to sweat, a nikkas stressed
We up beside a horrible mess
I saw a box with the letters on it S.O.S
So I took out a flare gun and shot the kid in the chest
Took the Tec from out his hand, now I’m ready to bless
The madness, put the rest of them nikkas to rest
Looked around, the chick’s man was the only one left
Threw his ass over board and told him hold your breath
Caught my breath, I seen honey down on the deck
Eyes closed with a bullet hole dead in her breast
Held her in my arms till her soul finally left
I’m mad depressed, my baby was an innocent death
A real thug lost the only women he loved
And I bugged, busting slugs at the stars above
The entire 3rd verse has just mind blowing imagery when you listen to it.
The song is just so perfect and cinematic from the imagery, to the perfectly planned beat changes, sound effects, plot, and etc… It is so exciting and epic.
