A trick-or-treater in New Jersey got a bag of heroin

A trick-or-treater in South Jersey was surprised to find a bag of heroin among his candy prizes and it has parents in the Garden State double-checking their kid’s Halloween treats.
A Cape May mother who asked to remain anonymous told NBC News that her 11- and 7-year-old sons attended a trick-or-treating event on Oct. 25, where one of them hauled in a suspicious baggie with the cartoon character 'Deadpool’ stamped on its cover. A test that came back this week reportedly revealed the bag contained heroin. Now authorities are warning parents to be vigilant.
"I had looked at it closer and I was like, ‘Wait. That’s not candy,’” the startled mom said.
She added that the son who got the unwanted treat is a superhero fan, who has autism and could have been killed had he ingested the powerful opiate.
"Honesty, if I wasn’t aware, if I didn’t find that and he found that, he would be dead,” she said.
Authorities called the “Deadpool” bag that found its way to the Jersey child’s Halloween bag an isolate incident, but are warning parents to look over everything their kids collected while door-knocking.
"Parents and guardians should be vigilante while Trick or Treating with their children and if at all possible do not let them consume any candy until a thorough inspection has been completed after returning home,” a Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson told NBC.
Other unwanted treats reportedly found in Halloween hauls this season included bare razor blades that were dropped into kids’ baskets in Waterbury, Conn. and a needle found inside a Tootsie Roll in northeast Alabama.
