El negrito de tejas
Fukk the govt I got my own Deficit
breh, it's literally the whitest major city in the country
I came here for school not really knowing the demographics like that, I just wanted a change from the east coast
I've experienced more racist shyt in the two years in change that I've been here than I've ever experienced in my life b
I learned basically, that a cac is a cac is a cac from living out here
you have all these "progressives" and "liberals" out here but the place is really only inclusive to diversity amongst white folks
they don't like you to be TOO too black, or be assertive about your identity
if you talk about your experience they'll deflect it with some talk about "intersectionality" and about how they're oppressed too because they have tatoos and piercings
I had one guy tell me, who was from Olympia, Wa btw, "if you don't like my city then you can GTFOH", which is really a hop, skip, and a jump from "****** go back to Africa"
make no mistake, this place from the very beginning of it's inception was intended to be a White Utopia
historically they've done the black community dirty as any place down south of the mason dixon and up until my birth year if you were caught in the state of Oregon you literally could be whipped. they were called "lash laws"
before Mike Brown and Portland Police Department murdered not one, but TWO brothers six months apart in 2012, both of whom were unarmed and not committing a crime. cops just shot 'em because they "looked suspicious" or "dangerous". Kendra James, also unarmed and not committing any crime, was shot at a traffic stop
Portland Police Department has also been found to engage in discriminatory traffic stops and arrest rates in addition to a pattern of using excessive force when it comes to people of color, particularly black people. which is all the more galling cuz there's only but a handful of us out here.
and THEN there's the way the Police, Fire Department, and City Gov't conspire to harass and shutdown any hip hop function in the city. as a freelance music journalist in this town i've seen and heard some wild shyt in regards to all that too.
I've got horror stories for days about my own personal experience, don't let that Portlandia shyt fool you.
if you wanna know more here's some links I wish I had read before I moved here.
a professor at my school makes this presentation all around the state and comrades of mine in the movement out here have been tasked to do security for her because of death threats
