According to two separate fan sources, Activision studio Vicarious Visions was working on a new Donkey Kong game codenamed Freedom, which would have featured an open world environment and, as a result of the studio’s experience with the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise, would have DK roaming around on banana roller-skates.

Damn, that sounded like it would've been a really great game. VV did a great job with the Crash trilogy remake and it being done with some fluidity borrowed from the Tony Hawk games sounds like a game that could've been a banger.

They really let Mario take his spot when he was just a supporting character.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Donkey Kong works best on a 2D plane. Diddy Kong racing being the exception.

i thought DK64 was pretty good?
It was but Rare went overboard with the collect-a-thon gimmick and character switching gimmick (by creating annoying barriers that halted progression)
