I agree with OP...If you look back in history, when a people take another to a full out war, the two nations tend to have more respect for each other after the war is over...

The key points are that the war must eventually end, and the winner should get their asses whipped so hard that they can't really celebrate the victory, just look back in horror at all the destruction of the war...
