African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone

5h ago

The AfCFTA is the largest trade bloc since the creation of the World Trade Organization in 1994.

Focus on Africa
"The eyes of the world are turned to Africa," Egyptian President and AU chairman Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said at the summit's opening ceremony on Sunday.

"AfCFTA will reinforce our negotiating position on the international stage. It will represent an important step," he added.

The African free-trade bloc will help boost the continent's long-stymied economy by strengthening interregional trade and supply chains.

The free-trade zone should be operational from July 2020, AU trade and industry commissioner Albert Muchanga told the AFP news agency

This is huge. Potentially 5 trillion dollars fully connected under one trade agreement.

There needs to be a manufacturing mandate but that's what these west African countries are pushing for.

Countries like Botswana could conceivably triple their gdp because they have established mining processes. Rejoice.

Also west Africa removing their France pegged and dependant currency for a centralized one was essentially revving up for this very situation. Gotta keep the Chinese wolves of our collective backs but so far this is the kind of agreement I've been waiting for.

Gotta comb through the specifics. So far it does not include a manufacturing mandate so that's of utmost importance.

They won't but what choice do they have. Africa finally showing self reliance is a threat to most nations. Especially once they collectively find education and manufacturing initiatives. It's a rap then.

I'm a cynic, unfortunately. But let's see if China and Europe don't use this free trade bloc to dump their goods into Africa tariff-free.

Otherwise, theoretically, it's a good first step. :ehh:
