Should they really be considered black in the USA?

I say this because they seem to be really overrepresented in the professions now. As a group are they really at a disadvantaged?

I got access to the a list of top performing "Blacks" in the my industry, and 70% of the names were obviously African Immigrants, the rest were all English Female names, which is an entirely different story. African Immigrants from places like Kenya have often have English names, so there could be even more African Immigrants. It's about 100 or so of the best Blacks out of all the National firms. Because of it's small size, it could be a very elite group.

I also got to see a list of the new partners in the firm. There were a handful or African names on that list. That's a big deal I think.

They seem to be extremely overrepresented in the professions. Are they really disadvantaged as a group? Should they be haphazardly grouped together with Black Americans. It doesn't seem fair to me. I understand the idea of affirmative action to help Black Americans, but African Immigrants are clearly top performers. Should they also benefit from social engineering programs?

I think the first question is what percentage of those with African names can you confirm were/are immigrants? And how to African Immigrants benefit from social engineering programs? Do you think they benefit more than others? And if so, why?

Immigrants don't qualify for affirmative action, we're not residents, knock that bullshyt off. We go to school in the states and excel because much like asians, we come from well off environments, children of officials, execs, politicians and things like that. We are in your top percentage because we bust our arses off. It is expected of us.

We actually have to pay more for school being international students. :childplease:

You do realize that the other top "Blacks" in your industry could be from the Caribbean, they have names similar to ours. I think the best solution is to stop making these lists.

Black immigrants to the United States are disadvantaged in ways similar to African-Americans. Due to the colour of their skin, they will be stereotyped and discriminated against by their fellow citizens just as much as their brothers and sisters who come from America. The similarity ends when you realize that these immigrants have not been robbed over 15 generations or more because of white supremacy. Also, the elite of many black nations immigrate to the U.S. to gain a better life.

Here's the interesting thing about Affirmative Action programs. They're meant to deal with current discrimination in US post-secondary education. This would also include these black immigrants because they too will be discriminated against because of their skin colour and origin. However, OP is correct is pointing out how it can give big advantages to say the Nigerian student whose father in Lagos owns 18 Mr. Big franchises.

Norfeast groovin…
Yeah, cuz they're viewed as black within this caste system regardless of where they originate from. Not to mention AAs have African ancestry themselves. I think keeping those communities together helps them all in terms of mutual cooperation in economics, education, etc etc.

I think African taking advantage if aa is another argument to get rid of it

If I understood you correctly then I agree.... complaining about successful African immigrants is just another way to be divisive in the black community and within the black experience...

I'm rooting for all African folks (distant and near) to take over.... Instead of complaining, hell; join in on the takeover....

Edit: So I didn't understand what you were saying.... I think you were saying Africans utilizing the affirmative action programs leave African-Americans locked out of opportunities and because of this, Affirmative action should be eliminated? If so,
Then I disagree..

i dont think aa is an opportunity for african americans, i think AA is white liberals throwing some crumbs at black people, so i think it should be eliminated period one of my reasons for saying that is the fact that the majority of people that benefit from AA are not actually african american, its a lot white women, hispanics and africans, its basically gotten out of control and its misguided black people into think AA is the key to black progress

Who is talking about school? my company has a URM recruiting policy. That I think High performing African immigrant take slots away from Slave descendant who actually had a real dsiadvantage.

I may have abused that policy too by marking myself as a black american, honestly. I am also on the list, so I doubt anyone here would happy with that. It's an all expense paid trip. however, I not going to attend because I think it is immoral for me to go.
