Police stand guard after the Confederate statue known as "Silent Sam" was toppled by protesters on campus at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Monday.

Demonstrators gathered at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill campus Monday night achieved a decades-long goal for those opposed to public displays of Confederate statues: They toppled "Silent Sam," a monument dedicated to fallen Civil War-era soldiers.

A crowd of about 250 students, faculty and local residents carrying banners that condemned white supremacy stormed the bronze sculpture and, using ropes, brought it crashing down from its century-old pedestal. It was the culmination of a protest that began earlier in the evening, on the eve of the first day of classes.

"I feel liberated — like I'm a part of something big. It's literally my fourth day here," first-year Natalia Walker told The Daily Tar Heel. "This is the biggest thing I've ever been a part of in my life."

Dwayne Dixon, a teaching assistant professor of Asian studies, told the paper, "I watched it groan and shiver and come asunder."

"I mean, it feels biblical. It's thundering and starting to rain. It's almost like heaven is trying to wash away the soiled, contaminated remains," Dixon said.

The News & Observer reports.

According to the newspaper, "Clint Procell, 31, wore a Trump hat. A self-described conservative, Procell said he wanted to see for himself how intolerant the people protesting Silent Sam were, and the experience didn't disappoint. He said he was pushed and his hat was temporarily stolen."

"The main reason for me to come was to see the people fighting against [President] Trump," Procell told The News & Observer.

Future For Confederate Monuments After Removal Is Not All The Same
An NBC video showed protesters erupting into jubilant cheers after the statue hit the ground. Some gathered around, taking turns kicking the felled figure and trying to cover it with dirt.

Yea, it was big news down here then Trump's cronies got bounced and now it's just one of the many stories.

That being said, a lot of cacs hiding under the radar fully exposed themselves.

@newworldafro thoughts? :mjgrin:

My thoughts are exactly the same.

1) Where does it end.
2) Avoid giddiness to tear down history in structural form, and instead add to it. There are African American figures not named Michael Jordan from North Carolina or had something to do with UNC that could get a statue added to UNC's campus.

The best example is the National Mall Washington, DC. We have an African American and a Native American museum in middle of structures names for slave holders and warmongering colonists. That's my position. Add to history. That's the biggest middle finger to historical systematic racism and injustice, when you can tell and show the entire story, IMO.

We going rename Washington, DC?

We gone rename thousands of other cities, counties, and states?

We gone burn the Constitution and Bill of Rights?

We gone destroy anything that a racist or slaveholder ever had anything to do with:jbhmm:?

It's a real question.

City of Austin, TX commission has floated the idea of renaming the city.......because the the individual the city is named for said or did racist things.........
https://nypost.com/2018/07/30/austin-considers-renaming-city-over-ties-to-slavery/ where does it end?

Georgia Guidestones mention eliminating Earth's population, except for 500 million ......:jbhmm:.....yet .......:patrice:.

No I don't want to see it destroyed anymore than any other statue, but I wonder how soon it's brought up in mainstream corporate media :lupe:?

Except these statues have little to do with actual history and are clearly cheap intimidation tactics by bitter cacs.

not gonna quote @newworldafro post because its long as fukk but on the point of where does it end...yeah eventually we should rename shyt based on the founding fathers. this happens in every society - as values evolve we decide that we dont want to emulate people we previously did.
same with the constitution - eventually we decide the legal values we once prized are no longer applicable.

now this isnt gonna happen anytime soon because our society can barely even handle getting rid of cheap imitation confederate monuments. but it will happen eventually. and its nothing to fear.

I respect your honesty.
Yes values do change.
Yes, culture is dynamic.

However, why "throw out the baby with the bath water". The Bill of Rights is one of the greatest documents against tyranny ever printed.

Are we going to stop driving Volkswagen because they helped the Nazis.

We gone stop speaking English because the English enslaved and murdered millions.

We gone tear down the interstate system, because it was initiated during middle of Jim Crow?

Based on your logic, everybody, except for pure blood Native Americans need to leave the United States.

You want to tear down everything, and start from scratch, just because the time period ideas and concepts were created weren't as enlightened as we are today??. That's ass backwards, breh.

If you see my point.....culture is dynamic, but the way forward is to remember the past, but build on the present.

youre making huge leaps that have nothing to do with what i said and then saying "based on your logic"...
no, the stuff you said about leaving the US, not speaking english and buying volkswagens is not connected in substance to anything i said. im talking about the way we honor people, memorialize them and (with the constitution) continue to uphold old legal documents.
your equivalency would make sense if id said something like
"we shouldnt use roads named after confederate generals" . theres no logical connection between what i said and your argument.
also i even implied WE SHOULDNT tear everything down and start from scratch because or society isnt prepared for that. not sure where you got that from
