The FBI has begun an investigation after several black churches were defaced with KKK graffiti over the weekend. According to authorities, several churches were painted with “KKK”.
The Tallahassee Democrat speculated that the rash of vandalism could be connected to racially inflammatory comments made about Ferguson protesters made by Wakulla County deputies.
The deputies expressed their support for police officer Darren Wilson and called protesters “cockroaches.”
“Dαmn cockroaches! Squash ‘em all!!!! I say we rally for Wilson, who’s with me?” Wakulla County Deputy Richard Moon wrote.
They were suspended after the comments were made public.
“Targeted churches were Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church, 189 Harvey-Melton Road off Coastal Highway, and New Bridge Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 1282 Spring Creek Highway — the venue of a recent contentious town hall meeting in the wake of racially insensitive online comments made by a WCSO deputy,” the paper reported.
“I rushed out to see it and then, I just prayed a quick prayer. I said ‘The Lord will be with us with this situation.’ So we are praying, and we are depending on the Lord,” New Bridge Hope Missionary Baptist Church member Olivia Howard said.
New Bridge Hope’s Pastor Derek Howard said he was shocked to see the graffiti after he arrived at church around 8:30AM.
“I saw it as a threat. I didn’t know if someone was behind me or still in the area,” he said.
He continued: “We’re going to continue to preach the word and teach the word….This is a hate crime on the church and the membership here, but it’s also on the community as a whole.”
NAACP Organizing Committee Anginita Rosier told the paper that there’s a connection between the deputy’s comments and the vandalism.
“We feel [the incident] is directly related to the incident related to the Sheriff’s Department and the officers who have been suspended so far, pending the outcome of the investigation,” she explained.
