Twenty five years ago, DJ Premier and MF DOOM (then known as Zev Love X) were getting COMFORTABLE
in the industry. Premier, care of the group Gang Starr, was less than a year removed from releasing debut LP No More Mr. Nice Guy on Wild Pitch Records with partner and group co-founder, Guru. DOOM, was hard at work on his own group debut, Mr. Hood, alongside his KMD (Kausing Much Damage) crew, featuring his blood brother Subroc, and Rodan. Within the year, the trioβfirst heard 3rd Bassβ 1989 hit βThe Gas Face,β would sign to Elektra Records (under Dante Ross), and make their critically-acclaimed 1991 breakthrough.
In the two and a half decades that have followed, both Premo and DOOM have risen to iconic status as skilled musicians. With Gang Starr, Premier would release two gold albums, and one Top 10 debut, in 1998β²s Moment Of Truth LP. DOOM achieved Top 40 status 10 years ago, care of his DangerDOOM album, The Mouse & The Mask alongside Gnarls Barkley co-founder and Providence, Rhode Island producer Danger Mouse. Additionally, both artists would work with and influence a host of peers and proteges, ranging from Nas to Christina Aguliera, to Madlib and Kanye West. Each have covered magazines, toured the world, and built careers that far reach beyond the expectations Heads may have had back in 1990.
In all of this time, while the two men would work on some of the same projects (see: De La Soulβs The Grind Date, Non Phixionβs The Future Is Now), they never released music together.
Following the Top 60 release of PRhyme, by Premier, Royce Da 5β9β³ and Adrian Youngeβs group of the same name, that is now changing. βWeβre shooting a video for every song on [PRhyme], and Royce [Da 5'9"] and I are hitting the road in February. Weβre also getting ready to release the deluxe version with three to five new cuts on it. I canβt name all of the artists on it, but weβve got MF DOOM on one,βconfirmed DJ Premier to The New York Observer. βWeβre putting that out on 45β³ box set and digital.β
The release date for PRhyme (Deluxe Edition) is still forthcoming.
In the same interview, Premier also confirmed that in the closing of HeadQCourterz Studios (formerly known as D&D Studios), which is now underway, that he will be moving to Kaufman Astoria Studios, in Queens, New York. The interview alludes to some of the moves and reflections from Premier, text well worth the time.
