The risks then were the exact same risks today yet they did not deter leadership from leading their troops. Arguably it made war between nations less likely, because your 40yr old leader faced the same risks as your avg 18yr old infantry recruit.

Breh, they did a lot of dumb shyt back then also, like wearing bright red uniforms and beating loud drums into battle instead of camouflaged uniforms and hiding their positions . Dont even go there.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it is a sound strategy. Chess is a good example. Once you lose the King, the game is over. War is the same way, it doesn't matter how strong your positioning is, once the opponent takes out the leader, morale (and likely strategy) falls off a cliff. The only caveat I can think of is if the war is almost over, they might use it as a rallying cry
