The real question is, who will reap the benefits of the Africa boom?

Much of Africa still developing its infrastructure at a time of transition to renewables(climate change) and AI/automation can put it at an advantage since it doesn't need to do away with legacy systems/infrastructure. But they still lack investment and realistically may not have all the expertise yet. Enter China and the West. Hopefully leaders have learned from past centuries and ensure that local companies and expertise are built up.

Africa won't get ahead until we stop fighting each other. We got the resources, work ethics and the will power to make some magic but wars, greed and western political influences are holding us back.

I think AI and advanced automation will accelerate development in many parts of Africa so quickly and dramatically that everyone will want to be there.

I see 3 use cases

1). Create jobs for locals
  • I forsee a new industry of "prompt generators" in abuja, accra, Nairobi, and dares Salam.

  • It's a very labor intensive activity for American and British AI firms to feed their ai engines in the west. Rather than paying a local 20 sterling or 25 dollars per hour to do it; I see an opening for Africans to do the exact same work for cheaper.

  • I'm envisioning something like how Facebook and Twitter had outsourced their content moderation to Cairo or Nairobi in the mid 00s. And they entered the local labor pools of these cities offering far more than local employers.

2). AI will optimize agriculture by
  • allowing farmers to efficiently plant, sew, fertilize, and fight pests based on aggregated data and satellite footage. Predictive analytics is key here so that entire harvests aren't wasted sue to pestilence, heat, or lack of biodiversity harming soil.

  • Identifying new water sources and acquifers using historical big data and satellite footage for the sahel region

3). Law enforcement to protect natural resources and wildlife

  • Rangers can't be everywhere at once but have to cover hundreds of thousands of sq miles of desert, Savannah, jungle, and steppes in Africa to stop poachers
  • Fishing authorities can't be everywhere at once but must cover millions of sq miles of ocean to prevent Chinese overfishing
  • Govt officials must cover entire regions to stop oil theft in regions like Nigerians oil coast and Gabon and Angola .

  • You could easily train a photorecogition ai to spot on unauthorized entrants into these areas , and use pattern recognition to track poachers, over fishers, oil thieves, etc using 24hr satellite feeds.
  • By doing so, much of the stolen wealth of Africa can be safeguarded.

Don't you think LLMs (or something more advanced) can potentially provide much of the needed expertise?

And actual Africans will control even less of their own continent than they already do

Wrong, Africa needs more fighting, more guns, and more revolutions. the problem is only the wrong people have access to guns.
