Finished the game. Man, this game is frustrating...
What I Like:
-Game play was pretty nice. It had similarities to TLOU1/2. You get a nice selection of weapons, and the flashlight system has been more streamlined compared to Wake 1. You can expect these things as its been 13 years since the first game.
-The environment looks great. It's one of the better looking games i've played. The dreary settings are very appropriate for Horror/thriller theme
-Horror/jumpscares were great. Again, horror themes
-The RPG elements like weapon upgrades and character buffs are always welcome
-Killing enemies in this game feels very satisfying when you land the killing blow/shot
-A decent amount of enemy variety, but they all are defeated the same way (shine light, expose, shoot/melee)
-Saga/Alan dont get winded after 3 seconds of running like in Alan Wake 1
-The Boss fights in this game were very creative. I especially like the 2 enemies that spring from the well, as well as the enemy that hides underwater while you race to the light. Both were very tense fights
-The ritual by the lake was pretty cool. The Old Gods of Asgard played their rock music. while you kill a ton of enemies. It was kinda like that one part in Alan Wake 1, but better
-Live action cutscenes were pretty cool. Never seen that in a video game before
What I didn't Like:
-The story was meh. 1, because it dragged on, and was kinda convoluted. 2, you have to beat the game 2x to get the true ending. I didn't do that. I looked it up. By the end of the game, i was kinda drained and frustrated. So let's get into it
-My main gripe in this game is that THERE IS PRETTY MUCH ZERO GUIDANCE on what to do/where to go next. IDK how many times i jogged around aimlessly as Wake trying to get to the next spot. In Alan Wake 1, there checkpoints that let you know where to go, and that game wasn't nearly as large. It was a pretty straightforward game. Knowing that, how can the developers take that feature away for an even larger scale game? That makes zero sense to me. It especially takes it's toll on your patience when you have to run away from the dark place enemies that can attack you while you're trying to figure out where to go next
-The plot board mechanic for Wake was AWFUL. It made the game unnecessarily confusing. Again, I had to look up a guide to know which of the 3 options to use for each location. Not only that, during the first time in the Dark Place, you had to backtrack to the beginning to advance the story after going deep in the subway. Again, HOW IN THE fukk ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?!
-Saga's Mind Place mechanic became a chore after a while. At the midpoint to end of the game, i was just pressing the pictures up to different parts of the wall to progress the story. And at the end of the game, you have to pretty much rebuild her Mind Place. That's another issue with the game: their mechanics just overstay their welcomes. The Plot Board, Mind Place, Profiling, The light charges, etc. all just linger and linger. When you just wanna sit down and progress the story, there are too many momentum killers. I think it leans too much into the FBI Agent motif
-This game could have done well to have a small map in the upper right corner. When I was in the Dark Place or in the forest especially, i had to keep pressing the touch pad to get to the map and make sure i'm going in the right place. Complete momentum-killer
-The side missions are uninteresting. I usually take time to do side quests, but i found all of them boring. I can't speak too much on them, but the rhyming doll story was boring to me
-The exploration wasn't very good either. Looting Cult stashes and Casey lunchboxes became boring after a while, and i stopped. You need to do the Casey lunchboxes to get upgrades for weapons. It kinda sucks that upgrading weapons is tied to a boring condition like searching the lunchboxes
-The movement in this game is weird at times. For example, if you are on a stage and walk up the steps to get on the stage, the only way you get down is by walking back down the stage. You can't just walk off the front of the stage. And this game does that a lot for small ledges.
-EVERYTHING in this game is a fukking puzzle. Nothing is straightforward at all. The game kinda goes up its own ass because everything has to be a chore to complete. If you're looking to sit down and play without thinking about everything, i wouldn't recommend this. I especially hated the "Theme Park Float" section of the game, where you had to keep looking for parts to reenact the ritual so you can advance the story. The Asgard retirement home section was a slog as well.
-Saga and Wake are cool, but don't have much personality. I don't think the voice acting/direction was all that great
-To get the true ending, you have to play NG+. Personally, I dont think the game is good enough to play through twice to get the real ending of the game. I'd just look it up on youtube.
-The game glitched out on me a few times. I looked it up, and players were complaining about some stability issues and glitching. Apparently being nearly 2 years removed from the release hasn't fixed everything
Anyway, it's late, but that's what frustrated me. Alan Wake 2 is a good game until you realize that it gets in its own way constantly. Everything has to be a puzzle, there are a lot of poorly-executed ideas that might annoy you more than impress you.
Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10. I don't have any desire to come back to it. It was just too frustrating to play. I also would not recommend it. The Last of Us 1 and 2 are pretty much the gold standard when it comes to games like these. I couldn't finish the Silent Hill remake, and this one was better, but not by much.
Welp, onto Clair Obscur....
