From what I'm hearing, its that but it's not something he shouldn't fully recover from. He immediately went to the hospital, medical staff on the spot. Highly unlikely under those circumstances that an infection would win out. So there's that

Aside from that, his injuries and age means there's a low chance he plays again. Medicine has advanced so we can repair injuries we couldn't before, but there is no known medicine that will make an older person not get injured again. I didn't realize until recently that these compound leg injuries were as dangerous as they could be. The QB from USF or whatever it was didn't have blood flowing in his leg after his break. shyt can get spooky out here
