I will be honest and say that the only reason I have a little bit of Portuguese proficiency is because I speak Spanish which has a lot of similarities, but also have a lot of differences. The hardest part of learning Portuguese is the mastering the phonology(nasal sounds) for proper pronunciation of words. That will take a lot of time to learn. It's the most difficult romance language to learn for this very reason. Everything else is straight-forward if you're familiar with romance language grammar structure, especially Spanish.
