Amazon will reportedly soon add other online services to Prime Instant Video

Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers will soon be able to add other major TV and movie channels to their subscription packages, Bloomberg Business reports, making Prime more like a cable TV service than competitors such as Hulu and Netflix. The new feature, which will see landing pages for other video companies appearing inside Prime Instant Video, could go live as soon as next month, according to people reportedly familiar with the plans.

It's not yet clear which companies have set up deals with Amazon, but shows and movies from other on-demand video services should be easily distinguished from Prime Instant Video's own offerings — they'll be launched from separate pages inside Amazon's service, and will be marked with the partner's branding. Bloomberg says that Amazon is also developing a way to allow Prime users to log in directly to the video services included in their subscription packages, and will be packaging together its own cable-TV-esque bundles to offer to consumers.

The efforts to expand Prime Instant Video are apparently separate from the company's attempts to launch its own live TV service, as reported back in October. Prime will continue to offer on-demand video only, but Amazon is said to be conducting preliminary talks with networks such as CBS and NBCUniversal to start another service, that may eventually compete with Apple's own planned internet TV product.

In partnering with Amazon, other on-demand services may lose some of the revenue they would get if a customer came to them directly, but stand to gain a larger consumer base. Bloomberg notes that Prime is thought to be the second-biggest internet TV service after Netflix, which was estimated to have 43.2 million US subscribers at the close of the last financial quarter, and Amazon's offering could give TV and movie networks a way to secure money from a younger and more internet-literate crowd that has been turning off the TV in favor of streaming video.

Amazon will reportedly add other paid content networks to Prime Video

Amazon will soon offer Prime Members the option to unlock additional non-Prime video content through network partnerships, reports Bloomberg, and corroborated by my sources. Customers will be able to subscribe to “major, well-known movie and TV channels” through Amazon to expand their Prime Video library. One could, hypothetically, add an AMC, USA, or Syfy subscription to have on-demand access to the network’s content. The result would be a cross between a streaming video service and a cable subscription.

Bloomberg reports this new offering could be made available as early as next month. I’ve heard inklings, through my own sources at Amazon, of some unknown new Amazon service expected to be announced during the first week of December, which will then make its way to the Fire TV early next year.

My sources tell me the launch is currently slated for December 3rd, but is not locked down, having changed from the 2nd to the 3rd just today. I’m told “many networks” are involved, from well known ones, to boutique collections of special interest content. The beauty of this service is, a niche collection of content that could never make it as a traditional cable network, due to its small audience, can and will be available through this new Prime video feature.

Amazon’s TV network subscription service likely launching tomorrow

A trusted source at Amazon, who wishes to remain anonymous, has informed me that Amazon’s rumored TV network subscription service is schedualed to launch tomorrow. The new service will give Amazon Prime members the option to subscribe to individual TV networks for an additional monthly fee. Subscribing to a network will unlock that network’s on-demand content within Amazon Video. Two of the networks that are expected to be available at launch are Showtime and Starz, with many more coming soon.

Support for this new subscription service on the Fire TV will initially be limited. You will not be able to subscribe to a network from the Fire TV, but rather, must do so through Amazon’s website. Once subscribed to a network, all of its content will be accessible through the Fire TV, but there will be no easy way to browse the videos from a particular network. For now, you will have to find a network’s content using the Fire TV’s search function. A Fire TV software update, expected to arrive early next year, will add the ability to browse content by network, as well as the option to subscribe directly through the Fire TV itself.

While all signs seem to indicate the service will launch tomorrow, the date is not set in stone. The service was initially set to launch last week on December 2nd and was then changed to the 3rd, only to now be slated for tomorrow, December 7th. The launch delay is partially due to Amazon’s largest software quality assurance team being put completely out of commission due to the severe flooding in Chennai, India.
