Americans are about to start buying personal flamethrowers

The XM42, which shoots 25 feet of burning petrol, will be legal in 48 of America's 50 states

It is the very definition of a hot bargain: a personal flamethrower that shoots metres of fire and can be yours for just $699 (£467).

An American company is looking for funding to help it produce the XM42, which it says will be “the world’s first commercially available hand-held flamethrower”.

The device will be legal in 48 of America's 50 states, according to Ion Productions, which says only California and Maryland have laws regulating the use of flamethrowers.

What possible use could there be for a device that shoots out a stream of 25 feet of burning petrol, you ask? Ion has lots of suggestions including melting snow, burning up insects and "eliminating weeds between pavement cracks".

The company adds that it strongly encourages users to only use the flamethrower "away from others and away from anything that could be accidentally set on fire".

The XM42 is at the development stage and Ion is looking for money through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help it reach full production.

They shouldn't find it too difficult: within hours of the announcement the XM24 website had crashed under the weight of enormous internet traffic.

I don't think melting snow with a flamethrower is a good idea. Isn't the flame too hot for this ? Wouldn't it carbonize it instead ?
