Not surprising,Cops arent trained healthworkers so any encounter with someone mentally ill will likely end up with jail add the sorry state of the healthcare system and the private prisons needing warm bodies and its a recipe for disaster.
People used to complain that crazy hospitals were inhumane and now so is jail. The deinstitutionalization of mental health since the Civil Rights Movement is one thing that really needs to be examined and revamped. Seems like society functioned better when crazy people were segregated, committed, treated and sterilized from breeding more crazies that burdened society (including my crazy ass, wellbutrin popping, wine drinking colleagues). My parents used to tell me as a kid that all crazy people aren't locked up, wasn't until I became an adult did I realize what the hell they were trying to say.
