NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) — A wild goose chase? Newark Police say they’ve been given the runaround over the last two days, unable to confirm reports of animals on the loose.

Police received a report of wild monkeys on the loose at Georgia King Village at around 10:35 a.m. on Thursday, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

Animal Control officers responded to a similar report of monkeys in Newark streets on Wednesday, officials said. Neither reported incident has been confirmed.

“Officers have not located any monkeys,” Miranda said. “Any photos or videos posted on social media regarding this incident are likely AI-generated.”

Hariette Guity works in an office in the area around West Market Street.

“A coworker called and said be careful, there’s a monkey on the loose. When something does happen, then what?” she asked.

Earlier this month, Yonkers Police issued a warning about “A.I. Homeless Man Prank.”

The generated image appears to show a man standing inside rooms. People have been sent the image and have reported intruders in their homes.

“We need to use AI the right way and not play around too much. Having the police come for something that’s not real is a waste of their time when they could be doing other things,” said Richard Chapman, a Newark resident.

Newark police checked inside buildings and around the grounds.

While the incident is still under investigation, Miranda said it has been preliminarily determined to be “a hoax.”
