The social media influencer will be charged over allegations of rape, assault and controlling prostitution, prosecutors have announced
April 10 2025, 12.32pm BSTAndrew Tate, the self-confessed misogynistic social media influencer, faces ten charges in the UK, including rape, assault, human trafficking and controlling prostitution relating to three alleged victims, prosecutors have announced.
“These charging decisions follow a file of evidence from Bedfordshire police … however, the domestic criminal matters in Romania must be settled first.”
The European arrest warrant was issued last year at the request of Bedfordshire police. A Bucharest court ordered the extradition to the UK of the Tates following the conclusion of the criminal case in Romania.
The Romanian authorities were reported earlier in May to be considering dropping the charges against the Tates. The prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Wednesday that the case was “currently being resolved”, so no further information about proceedings can be disclosed.
Tate also faces a landmark civil claim for coercive control by four British women who allege they were strangled and threatened with a gun while being raped. He is being sued by two women who worked for his online sex business in Luton in 2015 and two former girlfriends in 2013 and 2014.
Tate says that the relationships with the women who accuse him of rape were consensual and the compensation case is being brought after the three-year deadline for civil claims. A three-week trial is scheduled for early 2027.
The Tate brothers were born in Washington. Their father, Emory Tate Jr, was a Chicago chess international master who has been described as a “trailblazer for African-American chess”. Their British mother, Eileen Tate, a catering assistant, moved to Luton after their divorce.
Tate, who has been described as “the king of toxic masculinity”, found fame in 2016 as a contestant on Channel 5’s Big Brother show. It only emerged in 2023 that he was expelled from the programme when producers were informed by police that they were investigating allegations of abuse.
He has built an online fanbase of millions via X. President Trump tapped into the movement during last year’s election campaign, pitching to young men through podcasts and conservative influencers.
Tristan took credit for the brothers’ role in Trump’s victory in November, boasting on X that “millions of young men in Europe and the USA have a healthy rightwing approach to politics that they would NOT have if Andrew Tate had never appeared on their phone screens”. He has claimed that the Romanian case against them was being driven by the US Agency for International Development.
The brothers were allowed by the Romanian authorities to travel to the US earlier in February and later went on holiday to Dubai.
