I’m an hour into this. Can’t believe this movie swept the Oscars. Holy shyt, what credibility they had is gone. :scust:

I’ve only seen Demi in the Substance, and I didn’t think she should have won the Oscar at the time, but she did a better job than Mikey. fukkin movie about a stripper won so many awards. :dead:

I liked Anora, but I watched it before the Oscars, and I really didn't have any expectations going in (I think this matters a lot).
But the Oscars have had plenty of misses: Out of Africa, Crash; people seem to have a problem with Driving Miss Daisy, Terms of Endearment and Green Book winning,

Anora was a genre mess. There were several genres that didn’t mesh together. You could literally break down the acts and see when they switch up.

Mikey’s acting was nowhere near Oscar caliber. Movie is about a bird with no brain blinded by wealth and thought she found “love.” :dead:

It’s not a bad movie, but it’s something I won’t watch again. Also, I can’t be the only one who wanted more fukkery with the candy store owner? :heh:

I mean, Mikey pretty much nailed that character. That's what a Brooklyn stripper would act and sound like.

Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for playing a similar character 3 decades ago, except she wasn't a sex worker.

They basically paid for that Oscar and there's a long list of women who win awards for playing sex workers and the like so it wasnt a coincidence. But Demi was never really an Oscar caliber actress, I wanted her to win as a legacy type thing but check out her flicks from the 90s like Disclosure, A Few Good Men and GI Jane. And ironically she payed a stripper in Strip Tease in '96, which was a notorious flop but her body was crazy built.

I don’t care if she nailed the recreation. It wasn’t a performance that was worth such a high honor.

I’m only using the roles they played in their respective movies they were nominated for. Demi in the Substance was better than Mikey in Anora.

I might watch Poor Things later. I read Emma’s character is basically a hoe too. :mjlol:

I saw both in theaters, and I liked Anora more. Not sure how to qualify each performance, but Anora was a masterpiece to me. The Substance was very good, but I wouldn't want to watch again. Anora, I would, not just for the acting, but the chaos, the style of direction, the interactions between characters.

The Substance had great suspense and tension, but it wasn't as funny or involving as Anora.

Plus I know girls like that, and met a bad girl from Queens that was just like Anora about 2 months after I saw it. So there's that too.
