The second rap song ever nominated for Record of the Year was Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise," at the 1996 Grammys. It's a pretty catchy song, and has some memorable lyrics, even if Coolio isn't the most charismatic MC to grace the stage (That hair, though). The nod seems reasonable enough, until you realize that 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G. were both denied awards that very year (for "Dear Mama" and "Big Poppa," respectively). Even Skee Lo's "I Wish" aged a little better than the Coolio classic. That's saying something

The Grammys was wack back then and Reggae was not in the Grammy's books.
And even if he was nominated in any given year back then he could be up against Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Eagles, Aretha Frankin and on.

Nowadays we have 4 dope artist, back then you could have 15 classics in one year from 3 genres.
Besides that it's like 100 different Grammys to win vs back then when you had what? 15 excluding the classic (Jazz, classical, Gospel etc) genres.
Rock didn't even have a category until the 80s.
