Atmos has been out for a few years now, DTS:X is finally making it's way into home theater receivers. Wondering of anyone has made the jump from 5.1 or 7.1 to height speakers (5.1.4 or 7.1.4) ? So far it looks like there are around 240 blu-ray's with an Atmos surround-sound track, about 41 with DTS:X. I started out
back when Pro-Logic was a thing (4.1), upgraded to Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS, then moved to 7.1, now at Atmos 7.1.4.
I can tell you the height channels add a serious overhead, immersive effect to the movies that have Atmos/DTS:X soundtracks, for the movies that don't the receivers can upmix to use the height channels accordingly. This also works for streaming sources and video games as well.
