26 years old ( in nyc) and im down bad in a fukked up situation with a wife and a kid. i cant keep working these minimum wage jobs for the rest of my life.

ive been considering joing the airforce or army specifically for cyber operations (cyber security).
im considering this because im looking for a career for when i get out. i dont plan to make a career out of the military. i just want to use it for the training and experience only. i dont care about traveling and shyt like that. im fine with being at a base in the middle of nowhere and my shawty said shell go anywhere with me.

my questions would be

does it matter which branch i join?

what other mos that can transfer out well that i should look into(inoe air traffic controllers make good bread)

what should i expect and what should i look out for if i go into the military

and how was your experience in the military and did it help you in your career when you got out

any cyber securitys brehs that are working is this a good way to get into the feild?

i plan on studying and learning even before i go to ait so any recommendations on books and videos i should watch are highly appreciated.

my ultimate goal is to do my 4 years come out and make 80k to 120k(a nikka would be happy as hell making 50k honestly thats more than my parents ever made). use the the military benefits so i could get more certs and buy a multi family house in albany,ny or philly.

Why do you want to get into Cyber Security? I only ask this because if it's for the money, let me tell you that you will be lucky to hit 60k coming out the military depending on where you are at. Secondly, to be successful in IT/Cyber Security you have to really have a passion for it. Working a 8 hour shift isn't going to be enough to advance in the field. You will need to put in countless hours of your own time to learn and grow. That said, I love it and could not see myself doing anything else. I don't have as much time in the IT/Cyber Security field as others but I envision that I will be doing this until I'm ready to retire. I don't want to discourage you from it OP, just want you to not go into it with unrealistic expectations. A lot of people think if they get a cert or two that they'll suddenly get hired and be earning six figures. That does happen occasionally but it is not the norm. You will usually have to grind hard to get to that point but it can be done. As far as learning, here's a reddit with a lot of different resources to help you get started. I don't know your background but I would recommend focusing on learning networking before any of the other advance topics. Networking is the core and if you can learn that well, you can pivot into many of the other areas in no time. Feel free to ask any additional questions and be sure to go through the sticky thread. There's ton of good information in there as well.

im currently stuck with working minimum wage jobs so i figured i should go into the military to get the benefits while im in and i can use there training and get experience so i can land a good career when im out. and it looked like cyber security was a good job and the experience i get in the military would translate to a regular job. so in a sense yeah its about the money. but after your post it seemed my expectations are high. im still trying to learn so thanks for the reply

Don't get me wrong you can make money but you have to grind. IT/Cybersecurity is one of those fields that you will have to be constantly learning since technology changes daily. I don't want to scare you away from it but at the same time I want you to understand what you're getting into. Military would be a great way to get into the field especially if you can get security clearance. With that and grinding out some certs, you would be able to easily obtain the salary you are looking for. You can eat real good but you have to really want it.

Military experience is a huge plus when it comes to defense contracting. I would join a branch, get an it assignment with a clearance, get out without any problems and get a gov contract job.

It doesn’t matter which branch. Just don’t do anything that would fukk your clearance up and your good.

I’m not a military breh, missed my chance, but every military breh I know says they would’ve joined the Air Force if they could do it all over again. Based on jobs that translate to the civilian world and standard of living while serving.
