a few questions.

1. Did you start off selling beats on your own website or did you use a beat selling community with other producers?

2. which beat selling communities were the best? the worst? and why?

3. How many beats did you have before you built your website? or did you already have plenty of beats prior to making your website?

4. How long did it take for you to make decent income just off of the beat selling hustle? I don't want to delve too much into marketing right now, because i need to focus on platform and content.

5. Are there any books/websites you recommend that could further my knowledge on the subject?

I am looking to sell my own beats through both my own website and beat selling communities. I am unknown, so I'm starting from scratch. Any tips to help out a newcomer on the business aspect would be appreciated.

1. I started on communities such as mybeatshop, with other producers.
I sold a bit there but nothing more so than my own website.

2. This depends on how you developed your brand through those websites for instance Boon Doc, used to primarily sell on Rocbattle, and soundclick. If you could get on the top of the charts in those days through battling and total # of plays you stood a chance of making a return on your investment and making a profit. It's not about the best and or worst it's about how you utilize the platform. However the best thing in my opinion to do is to build soley off of your own website that way you know that the people who come to your website are there to checkout YOUR material as opposed to going somewhere else on a beat site full of producers. Most people that go to beat sites are other producers trying to sell there beats so that definitely defeats the purpose of what you are trying to do. I'm not saying you won't get a few sells on these communities but now more than ever the trick is building your own brand that makes people want to flock to you.

The other benefit is that you start learning your clients by name. So you can tailor to them on a need basis.

3. I think when I first opened my website I had about 50 beats but you could start it with less. It's about being consistent have an upload schedule and stick to it. send out a mailing list weekly with new material ( not only new beats but free material that artists want and or need to hear from you. If you want to sell you have to give your potential clients something of continuous value, otherwise they will go somewhere else. There are so many producers out there now it really is important to develop a relationship with them.

4. 10+ years I'm not going to lie to you it takes work tons of it and it took a huge investment of time and money. A lot of people think that marketing ends when you put a beat on YouTube, and drop a few Facebook ads and then if that doesn't work they quit and say it doesn't work. It does work but it isn't an overnight venture by any means. I know some of the top producers that drop 10k on ads in a month period, you have to think about it as a business through and through

5. I don't have any books that I could recommend currently

I hope this helps you

Much successes
