Any tips for buying a used car off of Craiglist

I'm looking at the nice WV Jetta (2001-04) for 3G's

maybe a 2002 sonata or even a 2003 optima

anything I should know beforehand

Im going to bring a friend and test drive the car before I purchase any though

Well, those Jetta years maybe the most unreliable VW's of all time. Hope that helps. Otherwise, do like any other used car purchase, check it out, get the owner to get it inspected.

Get a Toyota, Honda or Nissan. Take it to an official dealer and have a pre-purchase inspection done.

There are plenty of cars outside of those that work just fine.

Yes, VW Jettas and Golfs III, IV, V and New Beetles all suck. Any VW that is "Hecho en Mexico" will have mechanical and electrical problems.

Will need spare bulbs and coil packs in the trunk when it comes to those year Jettas. Incredible MPG though if you go with a TDI (mileage will be very high in the 3K range, however.)

bring a mechanic with you, or ask if you can get it checked out by a mechanic beforehand.

Check the tires to see if they need to be replaced soona nd if they do then ask for like 300 off or something.

Check the carfax/car proof

make sure it can pass a safety and emissions test

check the oil

see if its still under warranty,

Bottom line, if you know cars, you don't restrict yourself to three car brands when shopping for them. Period.
