Can't Americans use WeChat already? Or has that been banned in the US? I used it over 10 years ago when I worked in NY and was working with some Chinese companies, and thought it was a great app.

@loekalization
I doubt it. People outside China been able to register on WeChat, Kuaishou, Weibo and all those other sites for years using foreign phone numbers. I don't see why this would suddenly change.

TikTok may shut down in the US this Sunday, impacting 170M users and 5M businesses. Creators could lose up to $50K/month in income. RedNote sees a surge with 500K+ new US users.

Here's why you shouldn't install the REDnote application:
1. REDnote or Xiaohongshu 小红书 directly translates as 'Little Red Book', a reference to former CCP leader Mao Zedong. If you don't know anything about Zedong, we suggest you do some homework.
2. Under China’s Cybersecurity Law, companies are required to store data locally and to provide government access upon request. There's an inherent risk that user data could be misused or accessed without proper oversight or consent.
3. REDnote’s data collection practices extend beyond the usual. The platform collects a wide range of user information, including biometric data such as faceprints. voiceprints, location tracking, browsing history, device identifiers, and user-generated content.
4. Lack of transparency exists around how user data is stored, shared or protected. Users don't know if data is sold to advertisers either for AI training or general access.
5. Because of the opaqueness surrounding biometric identifiers, e.g. face, voice etc, this data could be used to build profiles to conduct targeted advertising as well as behavioural manipulation.
In summary, REDnote is basically a form of spyware wrapped around a social media application. It's objective is to harvest as much personal data about you and others as possible.
Don't say you haven't been warned.

By "Chinese officials" what are we talking about here? The Jilin province's Tom Cotton? Or a leader of a national government office?
41/84
IT HAS ONLY BEEN A WEEK
42/84
Supposedly the CCP has already required red note to set up two servers one to service the people of China according to CCP regulations and another one to service the IPs of those outside of China
43/84
This was always the funniest outcome
44/84
Thing that never happens happened again
45/84
Oh no

The smart thing for China would be not to do that. The interactions are already paying dividend for China

Ugh, what are countries afraid we'll do if we all talk and joke together? Sad.
55/84
That is independent from Chinese effects. China's efforts are to influence the youth and their mechanism by making people feel good on social media apps through followings and likes can pull people onto the app where they can do this.
56/84
如果小红书让中国人能看到外国的东西,那可能被定罪颠覆国家政权罪,是要杀头的大罪。掩盖真相对中共续命很重要。

Let’s start the info wars. US should tell them everything about there life and 1989
58/84
From where? The information?
59/84
I’ve used the app. The Chinese ppl can get one shotted by schizo edits. They have no idea of internet degeneracy or online discourse. They live in a false reality and it was fun attempting to shatter that

Tbh if I were China I wouldn’t want my ppl to have access to half of you MFs either
63/84
Every single user should just message the Chinese ppl and say "there's a billion of you guys, you could overthrow the government whenever you want" and just keep sending that message to them. Of China wants to try to subvert Americans, we can play that game too lol.

China is still a developing country and is far behind the United States.
One reason is China still doesn't have drinkable tap water.
And 420 million Chinese people don't have running water, flushing toilet and paved road, more than entire of American population.

Where can Americans and Chinese people communicate online if this gets taken down or blocked? Anyone know? I seriously like talking to normal people from other countries and hate the feeling of fake internet walls keeping us separate regarding communication.
78/84
Yes, it would be terrible if ordinary users in China and the US were able to communicate with each other and exchange views.
79/84
China even bans Google Analytics
80/84
It will probably be banned by the US first so what are your white paymasters so afraid of?

Breaking: Stupid U.S. Politicians Now Looking at RedNote for "Sell or Ban."
As American “TikTok refugees” flee to China’s RedNote in protest of the looming ban, U.S. politicians are already setting their sights on this new cultural bridge, possibly aiming to extinguish this unexpected flame of cross-cultural exchange.
John Moolenaar @JohnMoolenaar, the Chair of the U.S. House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Communist Party of China, has publicly stated that RedNote could be the next target for forced divestiture under the same “sell or ban” law used against TikTok. Moolenaar, a key proponent of the TikTok legislation, argues that RedNote, being another app fully controlled by China, poses similar national security risks. <- Idiot!
He’s stirring the pot with familiar claims about the dangers of Chinese apps to U.S. national security, suggesting that the decision to target RedNote would be in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump, who has shifted his stance on TikTok during the campaign.
Michael Sobolik @michaelsobolik, from the Hudson Institute, added fuel to the fire by stating that the “sell or ban” legislation gives Congress the power to ban any app controlled by foreign adversaries like China if they have over a million monthly active users in the U.S. “Once that’s established, RedNote naturally becomes a target,” he said.
On January 14, RedNote topped the free app download charts in the U.S. on the Apple App Store, overtaking Lemon 8, another ByteDance app, just a day prior. Over 700,000 new users joined RedNote in just two days, a testament to the American backlash against the looming TikTok ban set for January 19.
CNN pointed out that before this surge, RedNote was relatively unknown outside the Chinese-speaking world. Unlike other Chinese social media apps that offer separate versions for domestic and international markets, RedNote maintains a single, Chinese-language interface, adding to its exotic appeal for Americans looking to protest government overreach.
Stella Kittrell, a 29-year-old content creator from Baltimore, expressed to Reuters that using RedNote feels like “showing the middle finger to the U.S. government” for its intrusive policies on business and privacy.
However, U.S. lawmakers and policy experts are quick to critique RedNote, alleging it poses even greater risks to user privacy and security than TikTok, despite RedNote’s focus on serving the Chinese "diaspora".
Nathan Leamer @NathanLeamerDC, once an FCC policy advisor, dramatically compared RedNote to a fentanyl-laced painkiller, painting a grim picture of its potential dangers. <- What a fukking clown!
South China Morning Post suggests that RedNote’s popularity might wane due to the lack of an English version or translation features, unlike other Chinese apps. Yet, Ivy Yang, a tech analyst, sees a silver lining, describing this as an unprecedented, organic form of U.S.-China cultural exchange where users are creatively bridging the language and cultural divide. Plus there's now rumours that RedNote will be implementing translation features, which is great.
Meanwhile, Lemon 8, another ByteDance app akin to RedNote, has also seen a surge in downloads, ranking second in the U.S. Apple Store. There’s uncertainty about whether the TikTok ban will extend to Lemon 8, given that the legislation could potentially affect all ByteDance applications.

Why push such an easily debunked lie? Exchanges between Chinese and TikTok refugees have been nonstop for the past few days. China has also extended visa free access to all western countries so people can see China with their own eyes and how they’ve been lied to by you know who.
83/84
sounds like bs. conveniently behind a paywall too
