Anyone know why my windows 7 laptop wifi won't work when I increase router speed past 54Mbps?

So yesterday, I was messing with my router port fowarding settings so I could remote into my work laptop from outside my crib.

Anyways, while I was in there, I upped the wifi speed from 54mbps to 300mbps, but once I did, my windows laptop wifi quit working.

but other devices in my house worked fine including all my ios devices and my MBP. anyone know what the deal with this is??

How old is the laptop?

I would say that maybe the wifi adapter is so old it doesnt support that speed....

Is it actually going from 2.4 ghz to 5?

WPA2, rename the SSID, and change the password. Don't broadcast SSID either after everything is set up and connected.

well they sent me the laptop when I started this job 2 years ago, and it was brand new in the box then. so It's only like 2 years old.

I havent dealt with consumer shyt in a while, but I think 54g is "wifi g" speeds, and "wifi n" is 300mbs -450mbps...or something like that.

So your adapter probably only supports wifi g and not wifi n, which would explain why it doesnt work when you switch your speeds.

this is what I'm thinking. I assumed the laptop would have a wireless n card, cuz all my other devices do. wireless n was around in 2013 for the most part.
