I finished watching but it was a chore...
There are a couple of cardinal sins for me when consuming media.
1. People infusing their politics when I don't give a shyt about those politics.
(The tricky part is that I agree "fiction" should depict what you wish the world to be, put under some stressor. I.E. the fiction should put your ideal world to a given test in order to explore how it holds up. But If I don't care for your ideal world I don't care for any exploration of it either.)
2. People harming an established story in order to express a political view.
(Looking at you Last Jedi ...that suicide scene destroyed mountains of established Starwars mythos for me.)
3. Not adhering to an internal narrative logic.
(This is my mother of all fukk yous when watching a movie or TV show)
I can deal with a lot of other negatives but the three above especially the 3rd will be a hard mountain for me to get over.
Annoying stuff in this series:
While I wanted to support this show I just got tired of all the obvious liberal box checking.

- interracial angle - check
- gays & lesbians - check
- disabled character - check
- "strong" single female - check
- etc etc
It feels like someone wrote down a list of "cool events" they wants to see dion or the mother do then tried to wrap a story around him doing those things ....even when those things conflict with the larger story arc.
EXAMPLES:
1. Dion pulls trees out of the ground and fish out the water, all before damn near drowning. Then the next day he is chasing squirrels around the yard like non of that shyt happened the day prior. His ma trying to help him control his powers and he dips out to chase a damn squirrel all so they can setup another scene of dion fukking up.
2. They are fighting this creature and the ma runs off to make a lightning rod ....how da fukk does the ma conceive of the idea of a lightning rod when the story depicts her as having no background in any kind of science. To be explicit she is an ex dancer who is now constructing lightning rods on the fly while in combat.
Some good stuff
With that said the "world building" is great in terms of all the players, connections, and events on the board. It looks fantastic in terms of sets & cinematography, special effects are impressive. Whatever problems I have with the acting is probably due to the script instead of the actors.
Think a black version of Stranger things with a shottie story.

If you watch it start on episode 3 or episode 2 at the 25:20 minute mark.

Most everything before episode 2 and 25:20 min is pure frustration. I'd say finish the show then watch the fist two episodes as a prequel or something. Hell the actual story doesn't even really kick into strong forward motion till around episode 4 or 5. Most everything before that is just defining who the players on the board are.
There is potential here in the larger concept and story arc but they must get rid of whoever wrote the script that expresses that story arc.

did we watch the same show?
