I smell bs on your post. You paid a deposit on an apartment without signing a lease? Where they do that? What fees beside application fees? Matter of fact what fees do you pay in advance to rent an apartment? Either you naive or gullible to do that.
Also if you use an agent , you pay 1 time for the credit check, that agent shows you multiple apartments and you don’t fill out and pay for every place shown unless you ultra stupid. You also get a copy of that credit check which you can present to other agents. In 2019 using Craigslist to find a place over street easy or something equivalent is borderline retarded.

I tried to rent a house through progress rental and had to pay a deposit just to "hold" the house. It was a part of the application process.
