Its possible, but you must eliminate non-automated objects. Humans are the issue.
If we implemented some of the stuff in @bnew 's threads about euro roads that segregate pedestrians and bycyclists from moving traffic, self driving would work. Id take it a step further and segregate non-autonomous cars too.
Self driving in such a manner would eliminate DUIs for people in a similar way to what we did for polio. Furthermore, Eliminating dumb cars and eventually , ordinary traffic accidents would be as rare as measles. Considering how many people die from fatal accidents per year globally, we should treat vehicular accidents as seriously as we historically treated diseases. Rather than fighting the panacea of automated transport, we should embrace it like a vaccine.

EVs are not a scam my guy. We just don't have the infrastructure to support the mass push for EVs. No lie, those autos are pretty damn amazing.
Self Driving technology is there but its not 100% reliable. Then again what auto is really 100%. Its human interaction with self driving tech that really needs to sort out.

it is a scam because electricity needs massive amounts of coal to be burnt. At this point, oil and gas are better options
in order for self-driving cars to work you would need to rebuild the entire traffic grid, nobody is gonna do that....there are too many variables currently
