Apple’s new services are a Hail Mary to beat Google in search, calls, & more

Apple is launching a series of products later this year, and they all point in one direction: They want to replace Google.

For the most part, Google is an everyday utility. We look up movie times, call a friend, download a song, and browse the news. Apple wants to reclaim your daily computer experience with a slew of new and updated products.

While details are still forthcoming, here’s a list overview:

A desktop phone app to rival Google Voice, where phone calls will ring both phone and desktop, even if they’re in the same room. It also updates the messaging app, for easier sharing of photos and the ability to mute noisy threads (yes, that is Apple calling Dr. Dre in the photo).

A search function that automatically populates movie searches with starting times, restaurants searches with reviews from Yelp, and research inquires with Wikipedia entries. All of the information all populated in the normal desktop search function, Spotlight. Here’s a .gif for a search of the movie, Godzilla.

iCloud Drive, a cloud storage service for all of your files is getting up update for easy drag and drop sharing between your phone, desktop, and tablet. This is a direct competitor to Google’s Drive, which recently dropped its price on +100 GB storage.

Feedly support: To blistering criticism, Google decided to sunset its beloved RSS reader last year. Third party apps, such as Feedly, were happy to build replacements; and now, a new Safari plugin supports following RSS with one-click buttons right in the browser.

And, just to ensure that everyone knows that Apple is going after Google, CEO TimCook didn’t pull any punches.

Speaking about Apple’s 130 million first-time customers, Cook said that many had come from Google:

Many of these customers were switchers from Android. They had bought an Android phone, by mistake, and then sought a better experience. And a better life. And decided to check out iPhone and iOS.

So two of the largest technology companies are trying to improve devices that I’m connected to all day long. This tech battle is going to be great for consumers.

:ehh: Yeah, I've always said that Google has the best 1st-party apps & services. So, it's obvious why Microsoft & Apple are copying them & trying to take Google down so hard .

True. I hate when people say Apple has better apps when both get the same apps and G first party apps blow them out the water.

You sound like a guy who has extensively tried out all 3 market places and came to that conclusion based on your vast experience instead of fanboyism :handshake:

The landscape of the battlefield has changed. Its no longer about devices or the apps therein, its about eco systems now.

No doubt has Google has clear advantages in the Map, Search, and Mail areas. However I think the point that Cook brought up about the fragmentation of Android firmware holds weight mainly because they're in a race to create the best overall experience throughout each device and app and that's tough to do when you have a majority of users on old firmware, some with tablets on older or newer firmware, and a variety of pcs that could have an even larger variety of specs and OS versions.

Right now the power Apple holds with Mac, Iphone, and Ipad put them in a better position to control and optimize these types of efforts than Android at the moment.

I'm not coming from a position of fanboyism, I tried Droid MANY times. Before I got an iphone I had a droid and before I got an Ipad I had a Xoom 2 (wasn't that great) and of course before my MBP I had (and still have) a windows based PC

I would go back to Droid if I thought it was worth it, but at think at the moment it isn't worth switching for anyone regardless of which side you're on.

If you basing android off of them super old forays Into android hardware you don't have a clear view of what android is these days.

How does any of this invalidate anything I said in the first few section of my post though? When I said "droid" I meant the OS. What I actually had was the HTC Evo and to be honest for the phones to be so great alot of my friends can't seem to stop complaining about them. I could outline the reasons why I moved from Android but it would be irrelevant to my original point and I doubt you'd want to read that anyway.

My point was this isn't about apps and phones specs anymore. Its about building an Eco system in which these apps and devices co-exist and work to improve one another. While Google has some advantages the company in the position of power in this regard is Apple.

But hell i've been wrong before :yeshrug:
