Listen bro, I think your disdain for CACs is clouding your judgement. The age of empires ended largely because they themselves relinquished control of those empires. Very few nations actually gained independence from them by force. The cost of running and maintaining them (with all the upheaval and revolutionary movements) compounded by all the turmoil in Europe, simply did not justify the effort.

And yes those two wars have had a profound effect on the psyche and policy of Europeans. But even those events were self-inflicted wounds, no outside force came and subjugated them; they did it to themselves. Ever since they have tried to avoid conflicts of that scale, not only because of the hefty price tag in body count and destruction, but also because it is horrible businesses - we now live in a globalized economy and you can't go willy nilly fukking that up.

The notion that any other military faction comes close to comparing with NATO or even just the armed forces of the European Union is beyond asinine. Like I said East Asians and now to an extent India have and continue to acquire considerable power (and yet it still doesn't surpass them) but other than that who? Middle Easterns, Arabs? Israel alone would and has rocked their world. Who makes their weaponry? who do they buy it from? have you seen which nations produce the most weapons? and the most sophisticated? who makes the best vehicles or communication systems? cars, tanks, Airplanes, jet fighters, nuclear submarines? who has the best engineers? the best education, research and universities? most of the engineers responsible for oil extraction in the middle east come from other parts of the world (europe and america being over-represented). Is an endeavour such as CERN to be found in Arab nations? is Siemens Yemeni? is Bayer Qatari? is Volkswagen Moroccan?

War is more than just picking up a few utensils and charging at the sunset. It is the ultimate measure of a nations ability to successfully manage and utilize scarce resources under severe constraints. You explain to me how is it that they have, at the present moment, anything to realistically fear from anyone, apart from China in 30 to 50 years (maybe less).
