Yes they are doomed with this goofy shyt, but I understand the motivation behind teaching like this. Those of us who are mathematically inclined think like this naturally. I saw the problem as (35 x 10) + (35 x 2) = (350 + 70) = 420 (shyt could be broken down even further) Took even less time than the person on the right to figure out. My problem is that schools spend all of the time teaching the method. I would prefer that teachers made sure that kids have the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills that are integral to being successful in mathematics.
