I don't use Apple products. My niece wants me to get her a MacBook since her last one was stolen.

I'm seeing 2015 MacBooks go for $300+. I can find new budget non-Macs for that price.

2015 Macbook will be just fine for her. I just retired my 2013. And it just now stopped receiving MacOS updates (officially)

Depends on what she does with it

I still use my 2015 MacBook Pro. It still is supported with the newest update. Because of lack of boot camp support I’m holding onto it until I can build my PC whenever that happens. And performs as well since I got it.

Get her a M1 air. Deals around $800. She'll use it for years to come.
I'm not paying that much breh lol.
Depends on what she does with it

How old is she and what's the use case?
She has an iPhone (older one). She's 23 but has a couple of kids and wants to do remote customer service work. My other niece has a job that does that and could get her on.

Since she has an iPhone it would pair well with a MacBook...or does it matter? I built my desktop but other than my work laptop, I've never used or had one.

Do not buy her an Intel Macbook. They will be obsolete soon and she won't be able to get the latest updates for her Mac.

I recommend a base model Macbook Air M1. They're often on sale for 899 at Bestbuy and with the education discount at Apple you can get it for the same price anytime.

That old computer you're buying is probably going to need a new battery soon which 200 so by the time you get all that replaced you're looking at 500. Who knows how long the screen is going to last, or the ports, etc... Tell her parents to help spread out the cost if you weren't looking to spend more than a certain amount.

Apple is in a transitioning period where they're moving all of their computers to in house processors. Don't have your niece left behind outchea.

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
Let me put this in perspective.

I bought a used macbook pro 2010 in June of 2012 (but the dude who sold it to me updated it with the latest IOS) for 800 bucks at the time.

Earlier this year, it was getting a little laggy (i have yet to do any updates to it... literally using it the way homedude on craigs sold it to me over 9 years ago) and decided to cop a macbook pro 13.1 inch with the m1 chip earlier this year to start my mixing/dj'ing live streams. Basically was a stimmy cop. Why not.

Fam... that M1 chip MBP is collecting dust while i'm still using the 2010.

Just goes to show how long those things last. I'm literally going to use it til the wheels and buttons fall off.

But that new m1 chip is looking lonely... gotta get inspired to make/mix music though. Hopefully by spring.

Even with heavy use and abuse... apple products got that lastage.

Still use my ipad 3 from 2012 and my Ipod nano 16 gig from June 2010... both daily.

I'm sure if Ginness world records could document the hours i've put in said products... i'd beat any person in the history of electronics products. I really get my money's worf on these mofos. hahahaha (not a technofile so i don't care aboot upgrades until i really need to).

Gonna ride this iphone 11 professional maximus until the 16 comes out. hahaha!

lol.

I honestly don't know how you're still using that 2010 Mac. My 2012 MacBook Pro with 16gb of RAM and a SSD was getting slow as hell and the battery life was abysmal. My M1 air runs circles around it and last up to 4-5 days with moderate use.

Her mother is a drug addict that spends her money on body parts.

And my brother is a hobosexual. Dude hasn't had a steady job in almost 20 years. His kids have always call and text me for fathers day. Didn't even show up for Thanksgiving.

Ah damn... Well you're a good dude for looking out for your fam. If you can get that 2015 for less than 400 it's a decent buy.

But looking at the system requirements for macOS the model you're looking to get her will probably be cut off next year. With that being said, they do get security updates for the next couple years so her device will still be secure. So it's up to you.

Also @Skooby is it a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or MacBook. That does make a huge difference. If it's the 2015 MacBook I would recommend getting her a Windows computer with a SSD. The 2015 MacBook is slow as hell. This is the 2015 MacBook. MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) - Technical Specifications

The screensize being larger than 12" will let you know it's not the MacBook.
