Are Student Loan Assistance Services a Scam? Are There Legit Ones?

I have been looking for a service that can work with the government on my behalf to negotiate getting my loans reduced or at least deferred somehow as I am close to defaulting.

I went to a lady in my neighborhood who advertises student loan services and she cancelled my appointment 15 minutes before and said it was because 'the system was down' which sounded fishy to me. so I did some research on these places promising student loan assistance and found that there is some controversy over whether or not they are scams.

Can anyone shed some light on these services? Are they scams, and if not are there any such services you can recommend in the LA area? Any advice is appreciated.

If they're federal loans, the gov has a bunch of ways to lower monthly payments, defer, and what not. I had to defer my loans a couple of months ago because I went broke. Quick, online process. You shouldn't need one of those assistance programs.

What specifically would you like to know? I want to go back to school but I need to save up a certain amount to do so. I'd like to defer the loans to give me some time to save that up.

It was through MyFedLoan but I got a letter saying it's getting transferred over to the Department of Education because I haven't been paying. They said I have until 9/11 before I get put into Default.

Some are legit.
A coworker of mine uses SoFi and it saved him thousands of dollars.

I personally don't because the difference I would save is pretty small but you might want to look into SoFi
