I think a part of what’s going on too is black art being internalized as an overarching snapshot of black existence which of course is a recipe for disaster. Being black means different things for different black people but in these times where opinions are in abundance nothing hits the spot. Of course it’s your right to like whatever but I also feel the bellyaching tends to come from other shyt people have issues with
My long term thoughts on this is basically - I'd like all the other forms of Black Art to be as rich and varied as Black Music.
In hip hop, there's more than enough room for the Pee Wee Herman Dance, Laffy Taffy, Back Dat Azz Up, and Good Kid MAAD City, Illmatic, Atliens, etc. And let's not even start with Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Rock and Roll, EDM, Reggae, Afrobeat - etc.
We can literally do anything we want to musically wise.
Even this stuff has an audience
*Forest Dwellers?
But in terms of video - the cost of production and the ability to distribute has finally gotten to where we got stuff like Awkward Black Girl, RDC, Long Beach Griffy, Desi Banks, and the million other Black Video makers.
In essence, I think we're on the cusp of being free of the restrictive Hollywood system (and into the arms of the "algorithm") - because the Hollywood system is going through transition. Movie and Broadcast TV are just on the downtrend.
We might not ever get lots of Tarantino/Spielberg/Nolan/whoever types, because that system is going away....
