We didn’t have access to how people felt about various things because we weren’t connected, and most people tend to have some common decency in public.

This is why so many black people were shocked their white friends were racist.

Like you alluded to, attention-seeking behavior is the cause. I think certain types of people are just more likely to post because posting is easy; and posting something negative takes very little thought and effort compared to posting something positive and valuable. Genuinely good people don't really post stuff for the sake of posting (attention).

No absolutes here. Context matters and this is all just my opinion.
