I'm not trying to be anything like my father. To people who meet him they see a person who's charismatic, good speaker, leader, someone who always is the biggest person in a room. That's what THEY see. I see the man behind closed doors, lived with him 26 years, he's got a lot of flaws. I'm not trying to be him at 56. I try and take the good qualities of both of my parents (love for their children, intelligence, financial intelligence, morals, values, cleanliness, etc) and be the opposite of stuff I didn't like from them growing up (argued with each other too much, mom being psycho, late all the time, too judgmental, too strict, etc...)

I'm not going to lie and say that I haven't picked up anything from them or haven't walked a little of the paths they have, but in the long-term, everything I am and what I am trying to do is all about ensuring I do not end up like they did. And this isn't even about them being terrible people or whatever. I just don't want to end up like they did. I don't know what my dad is doing, but I know my mom isn't in the situation she thought she'd be in.

no you dont have to end up the same as them. but you shouldnt try to relate your lifes path and experiences to "normal" people that were raised in some leave it to beaver or huxtables childhood.

my parents are really smart and successful, especially my mom, so it wouldnt be the worst thing that could happen. i just would never want to have kids with 3 different people like my father. my mom does guest lectures at ivy league schools and stuff, i think thats pretty good.
