Without getting too deep into philosophy, sociology and psychology... much of our sense of self worth comes from other people. Meaning, when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we aren't just looking at "Me" at face value or how I see "Me"....we tend to see "Me" as others would see us. We are at the mercy of the desires of other people and people are inherently fickle. You can't make most people happy, most of the time while maintaining a positive self image. Hence the phrase "hell is other people". We experience everyday, all the time. It is inevitable part of being a social creature.

One common defense mechanism is to find safety in like minded ppl. A tribe. We all do it. Its a part of socialization. Our dopamine centers fire up whenever we experience this sense of "belonging". And its easy to over-invest to the point where turns into a form of group narcissism or you begin to identify with your tribe more than you do with youself. Any contradiction/questioning to your tribe becomes a personal attack.

As I stated, facing judgment from others is unavoidable. The only way to protect your sense of self/tribe is to weaken the influence of others. The best way to do this is by declaring your tribe and in turn, your superiority over them.
