OP, I don't know about Africans, but I notice other AAs don't smile as much as white people. Myself included. A middle aged/old black woman might smile if you smile at her, but usually with other black dudes its a head nod. With white people its usually that nervous smile that they exaggerate I guess to make it seem like they're not racist or nervous around you:

I'm a Kanye type of smiler. When someone's looking, I turn it off. When I'm with my folks, I'm all smiles.

Because that's what they do in their culture. Some of them touch others a lot too, and stand closer to others than Americans would.

It's funny I was walking on campus with some chick, it's late so not a lot of people are on campus and we run into this black guy. I just nod at him while my white homegirl gives him a awkward smile
