Either is fine. I tend to interchange.
I actually prefer it when whites say African American....I gain some satisfaction over the fact that many of them seem to hate the term. They have zero credibility in regards to how we identify.

I've always preferred the term Black American but I could go with African American if I wanted/needed to.
