i saw the lee 'scratch' perry thread and thought arthur lee deserved his own thread
his band "Love" 1965-1975 started/influenced a LOT of music. he is very forgotten. these days i think people are so starved for original music that we look back in time on bands: Love was the first very successful interracial rock band in los angeles, bands like the Doors used to open for them
very truly original songwriter, they say "Bummer in the summer" has one of the first "raps" delivered in rock music. their most famous album is "Forever Changes", but they had amazing singles even before 1967; he was also very influential to punk rock, 7 and 7 is still sounds like nothing else:
they were well known around LA. The Doors/Jim Morrison were very influenced by Arthur Lee.
he ended up doing some time in prison. when he got out he started playing again. their show at glastonbury 2003 was legendary.
he ended up passing away in 2006. it upsets me that he died before younger people could rediscover his music again. im glad younger people are rediscovering his stuff now. garbage magazines like rolling stone love to write about the beatles and pink floyd but bands like Love got overwritten in history. i think thats a damn shame. they have a facebook group demanding his inclusion at least.
